Nice Effect v1.20 ================= � Matt Browne / Acorn User 1994 Nice Effect fully supports interactive help through Acorn�s !Help or similar. If you�re stuck with using the program (although I can�t imagine how) please use this facility. Nice Effect is compatible with all versions of RISC OS. There�s an ENHANCED version built-in for RISC OS 3.5 users! A veritable frenzy of ColourPickerness and 16.7 million colours! Introduction ------------ Welcome to Nice Effect; an aesthetic delight on your Desktop! Please take a few moments to read these instructions. Nice Effect is a, er, nice effect! It also has a few other bits thrown in. There are two real uses of Nice Effect. Firstly, it can be used as a nice effect based on �moving� concentric circles. If you stare at the centre of the effect and then click the mouse, the Desktop (or, indeed, anywhere else you look) will either explode or implode in front of your eyes! The colours and direction of the effect are fully definable; play around with the program and use !Help if you get stuck. Nice Effect�s second use is as a model RISC�OS�3 Style Guide application, conforming almost EXACTLY to Acorn�s RISC OS 3 Style Guide. I must stress now that the animated icon bar icon ISN�T part of the Guide!!! Note that I don�t really like Acorn�s Style Guide much; but there it is. I have to admit that I DID like it a while ago; but unfortunately I was suffering from a temporary state of madness at that time. I won�t go into WHY it�s such a load of rubbish here, in case I upset a few people... :-) Oh dear. Anyway. The effect ---------- The effect is quite interesting. Well, a BIT interesting, anyway. Basically there are two types of concentric circles in the effect that seem to be moving into or out from the centre of the screen. If you stare at the centre of the screen for about thirty seconds or more, and then click the mouse to get out of the effect, the Desktop (or anywhere else you look; hang on, d�ja-vu here!) will explode or implode before your eyes, depending on the direction. You can set the colours and direction of the circles by using the main Nice Effect window. You can also set the value for the radii of the circles. Don�t use too small a value (ie. 1) if you�re using a TV-resolution monitor because the circles will have serious interference problems... :-( I think the best way to use Nice Effect is just to muck about with it - it�s not difficult to use at all - and see what happens. I�d be VERY interested to hear from anyone who has used Nice Effect for a specific purpose. (How about using it as an aid to induce a hypnotic trance?) In fact, I�d be very interested to hear from ANYONE, so please write! The address is at the bottom of this file. Programmers ----------- Oh you�re a programmer, are you? Take a while to have a look inside the application directory and see how it�s organised; especially the arrangment of templates, sprites, and ease of internationalisation. If you have any comments please write to the address below. How the effect works -------------------- This isn�t as complicated as you might think. When the user clicks on the �Start effect� icon in the main Nice Effect window (or presses return with the caret in the writable icon) the program selects a decent 16-colour mode for the type of monitor being used. Then, it blanks the screen palette so that you can�t see what�s happening, bungs the hourglass on, and draws concentric circles, rotating through the sixteen colours of the screen mode, towards the centre of the screen. When it has finished doing that, the hourglass is turned off, and the program frantically palette-switches, and waits for VSyncs, to give the effect of �animated� circles moving towards the centre of the screen. This is definitely not a silly sentence. Thank you.
