SibDemo/Read?Me/HowToDemo!
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

GIVING DEMONSTRATIONS If you're a computer user, why not spend a few minutes teaching yourself how to give a good demonstration of Sibelius? Then you can show it to musical friends and show them how good Sibelius and your Acorn are! If you're a dealer, you should learn how to give a demonstration of Sibelius, even if you don't have much (or any) musical knowledge. This will greatly help you make sales, and give you a better idea of what Sibelius can do. Note that there is a more elaborate HowToDemo! file for Sibelius 7 Student and Sibelius 7, because they can do quite a lot more. See the demo disk or Disc 3 for those programs. -------- HOW TO GIVE A BASIC DEMONSTRATION -------- Below is an outline demonstration you can give using these files. This assumes very little experience of using Sibelius, and you won't have to know much about music, either! There are instructions for giving a fuller demo at the end of this file. The music files used are: Narnia: an orchestral score to demonstrate editing, part extraction etc. Foo Espres / Foo Plain: for playback, the same file with and without Espressivo and Swing switched on. We advise that if you're only giving a basic demonstration you don't try using Flexi-time, or let the person you're demoing to try either! Details on how to demo Flexi-time are given later on, under 'How to give a fuller demonstration'. EDITING 'NARNIA' (This is the theme music to a well-known BBC TV children's series, which was published by Chester Music using Sibelius 7.) Load Narnia and move around using the radar at the bottom right: this is exceptionally fast. Conclusion: Sibelius is one of the fastest computer programs of any kind ever written. Unlike most music programs, you never have to wait for the screen to redraw. Try also dragging some notes, staves and lines. This is also extremely fast, and the program reacts intelligently to whatever you do. If you drag a note which is beamed to others, the beam will move to follow it, always staying at exactly the right angle to conform with complicated engraving rules. Select a note and try out the different function keys. Note that the rhythm keys always add or remove rests to keep the total length of the bar constant: this make it impossible for you to make a rhythmic mistake. Note also that Sibelius respaces the notes as you go along, keeping them all in correct vertical lines Select a note, and click Adjust on various staves to copy it around. The note-length, and any articulation marks or other markings on the note, are copied. The pitch of the note is determined by where you point. This is a very efficient way to input notes with a single click. Conclusion: Sibelius knows a great deal about music notation - in fact, more than many musicians! It is fast enough to apply its knowledge instantly whatever you do. REFORMATTING Choose Rhythm>Bar rest, then click Adjust on one of the barlines on the first page to insert a bar. Click it a few more times to copy the bar. The score is instantly reformatted whenever you make any change to it like this, which may well require the program to rewrite all pages of the score. All of this is handled instantly. Conclusion: you can make big insertions and deletions in a score, and the knock-on effects of these are handled instantly. This is essential for composing or arranging on the computer. Other music programs are VERY slow at reformatting like this. LINES Choose a slur from the top left of the Lines menu, or type Ctrl-S as a shortcut. Drag the Select button rightwards from anywhere in the score to draw a slur, then release. You can use Select to move either end of the slur around afterwards. Drag the middle of the slur around rapidly with Select to change the shape. Conclusion: just a simple 'point and click' produces a beautifully shaped slur, which is automatically tapered at the ends and thickened in the middle. PART EXTRACTION Most music programs, unlike Sibelius, only pretend they can extract parts properly. The process is very slow and produces a messy result which you have to spend hours checking and correcting. Load Narnia again and try extracting any part, e.g. Clarinet (which will also be transposed). Just select the stave and choose Edit>Extract part. Note that the part is completely respaced from scratch, with groups of bar rests grouped as multirests with a number. Note also that (in the Clarinet part) rehearsal letter A interrupts the two multirests at the start. So the program is extremely intelligent and very little editing in the part is required: just moving a few symbols which may have collided. Of course, you can also reformat the part onto a different page and/or stave size from the original. Choose Score format... from the File menu and change the stave size to e.g. 6mm, then click on Set. The part is instantly rewritten for the new format. Finally you can adjust the page turns in the part. Select any barline, such as a barline immediately after a bar rest or multirest, and choose Edit>Page break. Conclusion: Many music programs make mistakes when extracting parts, such as producing poor spacing or ignoring rehearsal marks within multirests. This makes the part extraction feature almost useless. With Sibelius, extracting parts and, very importantly, tidying them up is so fast that the time taken is almost negligible. This alone effectively halves the time it takes to produce a score with a set of parts. TRANSPOSING This is well illustrated by loading the Narnia score again. Then... Move into the Edit>Transpose> dialogue box. Click on the '2nd' button, and leave the other options set to Up and Transpose keys. Click on OK and, after a warning, the entire score will transpose up a 2nd. Note that slurs also move to follow the notes. Automatic functions like this are invaluable when composing or arranging music. NEW SCORE Close the score and click on the Sibelius icon on the icon bar to start a new one. Choose several instruments at random from the Instruments menu (clicking Adjust to keep the menu up for multiple selection) and click Select on the page. Sibelius sets up a correct score layout for you, with the instruments in the standard order (which you can change if necessary). The instruments are joined in groups with the correct brackets at the left hand side, and also with correct barline grouping. If you have MIDI equipment connected it sets up the sounds for you too. Select each stave in turn to hear the instrument's sound. Put in a few random notes for each instrument to show how you can compose interactively. Conclusion: again Sibelius is exceptionally intelligent. All the MIDI sounds are set up for you too, whereas on most music programs you'd have to type in weird numbers to set up the sounds yourself. PLAYBACK Load Narnia again and click on the play ('>') button. Try pressing the other CD buttons as well. It sounds rather mechanical because the computer is reading the notes literally. All the same, the program is intelligent because it reads text like 'mf', and even phrases in English, French and Italian, such as 'get quieter here' - not just 'stock' phrases. Other standard symbols like accents (>) are also read and obeyed. Use Expression text to type 'get quieter here' (or any other phrase containg the word 'quiet') above the Horn stave in bar 2, then play it again, to the amazement of all. Conclusion: you don't have to know anything about MIDI to use Sibelius, because everything is played directly from notation. You may also want to play some of the other files. SOUND QUALITY If you want to demonstrate high-quality sounds (and don't have professional MIDI equipment), play our demonstration cassette, available free of charge. This includes music which sounds so good that Sibelius has played it on television and in concerts. PRINTING If you're a dealer, Sibelius Software can supply you with some EXTREMELY impressive published scores, as well as sample music sheets to give away. These are good enough to persuade anybody. Please contact us for some. Please don't restrict yourself to what your own printer is capable of. With a fully-working (not demo) copy of Sibelius, you can demonstrate printing yourself. -------- HOW TO GIVE A FULLER DEMONSTRATION -------- If you're familiar with Sibelius, it works well if you do a fuller demonstration like this. You will need a MIDI keyboard and ideally also a good General MIDI compatible sound module or sound card. In advance, try out a suitable piece to ensure it will work well, and work out what you're going to add to it. Use Flexi-time to play in about 20 bars of a suitable fairly simple piano piece. Use Molto rubato, and vary the speed while you play to show that Flexi-time can follow you Add a metronome mark if necessary Play it back to show that the speed variations have been smoothed out Add another instrument to the piano and use step-time to play in a simple counter-melody (e.g. in semiquavers). Play it back again Add another instrument and use step-time to play in a further simple counter-melody (e.g. in crotchets) to fill out the harmony. Play a few bars back again Add a whole lot more instruments at once to make an orchestra. Include some pitched & unpitched percussion (e.g. Timpani and Cymbals) Copy passages from the existing music into the new instruments, transposing up or down an octave where necessary Add a few percussion notes Play it all back again Add some dynamics, phrase-marks and a title Play a few bars back again Save the file If you have a fully-working copy of Sibelius, print out the first page Extract a part from the score - preferably a transposing instrument Point out that the music has transposed (if it has), that all relevant markings including the title and metronome mark have been included, bar rests have been collected together into multirests, and the music has all been reformatted tidily Insert a page break somewhere to show how you can put convenient page-turns in. (As the part will be much less than a page, it will make more sense if you close this part and extract one from a much longer score to illustrate this point.) Finish by playing Narnia (or our demonstration cassette) to show more elaborate playback. We advise that you discourage the person you're demoing to from trying out Flexi-time themselves, as on first using it musicians often try to play complicated pieces without regard for the metronome or split note. If they insist on trying Flexi-time, get them to start with something simple first until they get the idea.
