 	This section deals with the human factor and influence in
my project. I am trying to state how my investigation links up with
people, both specifically and as a community. The first thing that
I thought of was that farmers thesedays are able to use fertilisers
on their land, thus increasing their yield. I think this relates
to my project well because if the ideal site for a certain use of
land is unavailable, the farmer can use fertilisers to improve the
quality of the land he has got. This situation is due to technical
developments and as I said, they are why land use has changed in
the last 100 years and can now be so flexible.

	I believe that demand for a certain type of product would
also influence the use of land. However, unlike the other factors I
have dealt with, this is an unseen factor - but still an important
one. This idea is highlighted very well by the arable fields which
have been left fallow this year. They are not all part of 'crop
rotation' but farmers are being paid subsidies to leave their
fields uncultivated because of great overproduction of crops.

	I have decided to include my case-study of the green belt
in Chipstead under this section because I believe it is part of the
'human factor'. The reason why Chipstead still has a great number
of fields and woodland areas is that it is part of the Green Belt
introduced around London. This means that new houses can not be
built on existing farmland and woodland. This is in order to
prevent the spread of towns and villages over 'green' areas. An
example of the Belt being put into effect are the number of
applications to build a motorway across fields in Chipstead in the
last number of years. They have all been turned down because this
would be building on Green Belt land. Another reason for their
rejection was the strong feelings by the villagers - human
influence again.

	An example of land protected by the Green Belt is the Long
Plantation, which is the strip of woodland running north to south
on the West side of Chipstead below the railway. After the storms,
much of it was damaged and it now has to be built up again so it
can continue to be preserved (see photograph D at the back).

	Another case of planning decisions which affect people's
lives can be seen in the section on Chipstead railway station.
Finally I am going to state my opinion, which I think is at least
of some value because I have been  living here for 10 years now. I
believe that Chipstead parish contains just the right balance of
housing, woodland, fields etc and this is also the feeling of the
majority of the residents - Chipstead should not be changed.
