This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Purpose
-------
        Transistor allows you to build and test potential divider circuits on the screen. It is designed to be used as an aid in the teaching of potential divider theory. It provides a  wide range of components so many different circuits can be experimented with.

The Icon bar
------------
        Transistor puts an icon on the right hand side of the Icon bar. Clicking on the icon with select or adjust (left or right mouse buttons) will show the current window, this is    initially the the design window but later can be the test window too. Clicking with menu     (middle mouse button) makes a menu appear:

        Selecting a menu Item has the following effects:

        Info    �  <--- Leads to a window showing information about Transistor
        Options �  <--- Leads to a dialogue box which allows you to choose between 5 or 4 
                        band format for resistor display
        Quit       <--- Quits Transistor

The Design Window
-----------------
        The design window shows the circuit diagram for a potential diver circuit. The       toolboxes to the left and the bottom of the window contain various components which can be   dragged into place on the diagram. The toolboxes can be turned on and off.

The toolbox on the left hand side of the window contains input components:

                        LDR                   Thermistor
                        Variable Resistor     Moisture Probe
                        Resistor              Switch

The toolbox under the window contains output components:

                        Lamp      LED      Buzzer

The input components can be dragged into place on the potential divider and the output       components can dragged into place above the transistor.

The resistance of the resistor can be changed by clicking on the current value, a carat      should appear and you can delete the old value and enter a new resistance.

You can enter resistance in any of these formats:

        100   -- 100 ohms
        100R  -- 100 ohms
        100r  -- 100 ohms
        1K    -- 1000 ohms
        1k    -- 1000 ohms
        1M    -- 10000000 ohms
        1m    -- 10000000 ohms  

There is a writable icon above the circuit diagram for you to enter a title for the circuit  into.

The Design Window Menu
----------------------
        Clicking on the design Menu with middle button brings up a menu:
                
        Enter   �  <--- Leads to the Enter submenu
        Test       <--- Closes the design window and opens the test window.
      � Toolboxes  <--- Turns The toolboxes on and off.

The enter submenu allows you to enter components without the tool boxes being present.

To enter a thermistor into R1, for example, you would choose 'Thermistor' from the list of   input components for R1.
                      
The Test Window
---------------
        You can open the test window by choosing 'Test' from the Design Window Menu. Once you open the test window it becomes the current window, so if you close it using the close icon you can then open it again by clicking on the icon on the iconbar.
        The title for the circuit, as specified in the design Window, is shown in the title  bar of the Test Window.
        The test window has a circuit diagram of the potential divider circuit at the top and the potential divider equation at the bottom. The equation is shown, first without any      values, then will all the values filled in and finally Vout is calculated. If Vout is above  0.7 Volts then the transistor will turn on the output. If the output is a Lamp or LED it will glow, if however it is a buzzer then the computer will make a beep approximately every 0.7   seconds.
        The test window has 2 smaller windows attached to the side of it. These change       depending on the components R1 and R2. They allow the conditions to be changed, for example, a thermistor is sensitive to temperature so it's window allows the temperature to be changed.
        As the conditions change the resistance of the components change so the values of R1 and R2 are updated in the equation and a new value of Vout is found and if necessary the     state of the output is changed.
        Only the resistor's window does not allow you to change the conditions as the        resistance of the resistor is fixed. However clicking on the small picture of a resistor in  the top righthand corner brings up a window showing the colour coding of the resistor in     either 4 or 5 band format. Note the resistor is always shown to have �5% tolerance. You can  only change the value of the resistor in the design window (see above).

The Test Window Menu
--------------------
        Clicking on the test window or the smaller attached windows with the middle mouse button (menu) brings up a menu. This menu only has one option 'ReDesign' this returns you to the design window and makes it the current window.
