You will probably find that you have to stare at them
for a longtime before you see the effect for the first time
(it took me severalhours), but it is well worth the wait. If
you still can't see them, don'tworry - apparently an
estimated 10% of the population can never see them.
The autostereograms produced by this program are not as
effectiveas the commercial ones (though they may be easier to
see). This is partlybecause they are black and white, and the
patterns are not attractive inthemselves, as they are
generated randomly. However, another seriouslimitation is
that the images you see are always parallel to the paper -
they can never slope towards or away from you. I have tried to
makesloping surfaces using a "staircase" effect - several
narrow bands of mode2 colours, with consecutive elevation
numbers. However, the resolution ofmode 0 graphics was not
really enough to make this successful.
You may wish to produce an autostereogram of a word, or
shortphrase. If so, I have sent in a program to print large
text on thescreen. This is based on the Banner Printing
program from Electron User(June 1989), and is described
elsewhere on the disc.
If you produce an impressive image, send it in! Perhaps
this couldbe the basis of a future competition, (i.e "What
object is shown in thisautostereogram?", with the source
picture included on the following disc)
I have included an example of an autostereogram on the
disc. Thesource picture is also there, but you may prefer not
to see this until youhave had a go at seeing the image. Good
