!AWOct94/Goodies/Protects/!Unlock/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

   Unlock V1.51 (25-Jul-1994)

Unlock is an "on the fly" unencryption application which operates as
part of the protector suite of programs, please read the !Help file found in
the protector directory if you are using this system for the first time.
Unlock is designed to allow you to double click on encrypted files
and applications as if they were in their normal form and process them in
the same way, you will though, be asked for the password before the file can
be used.
Eg. double clicking on an encrypted text file will cause unlock to prompt
you for a password then load an unencrypted version into !Edit (*)

Similarly applications with encrypted !Runimage files can be run in
the usual way using Unlock. Unlock does not require to be double clicked and
installed first, as long as it has been 'seen' by the filler you may double
click on any encrypted file and unlock will load into action. A window will
then appear asking for the password (it only has to be entered once) and an
unencrypted version will be run. The file that was double clicked on will
still remain perfectly encrypted. Errors may be generated after entering a
password or in the cased of a encrypted text file you may get complete
garbage appearing, this is due to the wrong password being supplied. Try
again with the proper one!
You may find it handy, if a lot of files and applications on your
computer are encrypted, to put a line in your hard disc's !Boot file to make
sure the unlock application has been "seen".

Eg.
 For RiscOS 3        *Filer_Boot ADFS::4.$.Utilities.Disc.!Unlock
 For RiscOS 2        *Run ADFS::4.$.Utilities.Disc.!Unlock.!Boot

RISC OS 3 users may ignore the next paragraph...

Unfortunately Due to limitations with Risc OS 2 any encrypted files
that are double clicked will be processed as though they have been *Run
rather than really double clicked, there are subtle differences between
these two ways of executing the files, most of the time the same results
will be achieved, for example with encrypted application !RunImage files,
but occasionally with things like text files and extra copy of !Edit will be
loaded instead of loading the file into the currently running one.

1 Mb memory users...

Hopefully you will not experience any memory problems when using
Unlock on your computer system, it only uses 64K of memory which should be
small enough for most occurrences of its use, normally problems will not
occur when running applications as the main part (the !RunImage file) will
have not been loaded yet (obviously as unlock has to unencrypt it!). If you
do run out of memory then try freeing some and run the encrypted file again.

N.B. Both Protector and Unlock have to have seen a copy of your !System or
!Scrap (*) folder before they will load, this is because they temporarily
need to store scrap files while performing (un) encryption.

(*) - RISC OS 3 only
