Chapter 3 Getting Started 3.1 Loading To load Optical, open the Filer window containing !OptclDemo and double-click on its icon. 3.2 Getting started Once Optical is on the icon bar, drag one of the sample sprites onto its icon. A window will appear asking for the resolution that the image was scanned at - just click on Enter . If the default settings have not been altered, a window should appear showing the page of text to be read. Click with Select on the Read button on the left of the toolbox accompanying this window. This starts the reading process, and an hourglass showing its progress should appear. The reading process can be aborted by holding down Escape . After the page has been read, a window should appear. This shows the OCRed text and is referred to as the OCRed text window in this manual. The text can be saved using standard RISC OS procedures, by clicking Menu over the OCRed text window, and dragging the save icon from the Save submenu to a Filer window or a text editor/ word processor. 3.3 The Icon bar menu Clicking Menu over Optical on the icon bar brings up the Icon bar menu. The first item is Info..., and moving the mouse right, across the arrow next to it, brings up a window giving information about Optical and the licensee. The next item down is Scanned image... . Selecting this opens a window displaying the original image which was OCRed, if it is still stored in memory. If it is greyed in, there is no image stored. There is also a submenu which contains two items. Show does the same as clicking on Scanned image... , and Remove frees memory by removing the scanned image from memory. The next item down is OCRed text... . Selecting this opens a window displaying the text which Optical has OCRed. Clicking with Select over Optical on the icon bar also opens this window. Font manager... opens the Font manager window which allows Optical to recognise new typefaces. This is explained in Chapter 9 - Teaching/ Selecting Fonts . Preferences... opens the Preferences window allowing you to adapt Optical to your own requirements. This is described in Chapter 5 - Preferences . The last item is Quit , which shuts down the application, giving warnings if Optical is currently reading, or if there is anything unsaved.
