This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- January 1992 ------------- This is the January '92 issue of Archimedes World. A lot of care has been taken in selecting software which is both entertaining and of practical use. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the software on this disk, unless otherwise stated, is copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1992. It may not be resold or copied except for the purposes of making a security backup. It should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original disk. Archived The '!AWJan92' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWJan92' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored on disk in the usual way. The only difference you will notice is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying Software When the '!AWJan92' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500k. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by choosing the Open viewer items on the Waiter menu. The directory viewer will appear showing the programs stored in the Archive. Copy the software by dragging the contents of the directory viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS. If you have any difficulties running software from the archive then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try running them from there. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the Waiter menu using our built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The Waiter disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu while others run applications or display text. To choose a menu item click the select button once over its icon. When an item is chosen, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. To stop the Waiter menu from disappearing after a choice has been made try pressing the adjust button instead of select. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Programs We proudly present an exclusive playable demo of the new Krisalis game, James Pond. Read the instructions to find out how to play the game and then run it from the Waiter menu. Those of you who have the RTFM joystick interface can run the !RTFMJoyen application to allow them to play the game with a joystick. Cellular Automatons are one of those areas of mathematics which does not have to be fully understood to be fun. With our !ArcAut application you can have a great deal of fun exploring this fascinating subject. Once the application has loaded you simply drag one of the many example text files from the Automatons directory onto the icon on the icon bar and the program will start. Finding directories and files on a large hard disk can be a chore. Endlessly opening and closing windows trying to find an elusive file. The !FindDir application adds more power to the desktop by allowing you to specify a rough or exact description of the file or directory you are after and then get it to look for it. Any files or directories which match the description are displayed in a window which acts just like a directory viewer. The programs can be deleted, run, dragged to other directory viewers, etc. etc. Once you have started using !FindDir you will wonder how you ever got on without it. Programming applications for use on the desktop is tough. It can take a while just to work out the binary flag settings for icons used in your application's windows. To help you avoid having to sit there with pieces of paper covered in 0s and 1s we present !IFlags. This is a simple desktop application allowing easy selection of Icon flag settings. Once you have chosen the colours, whether it is a sprite, contains text, has a border, etc. etc. the application shows the hexadecimal flag settings number which you can note down and then code into your program. Anything that makes programming easier is worth its weight in gold. Anyone who is successful at organization will tell you that the key is being able to prioritize tasks. Then by systematically going through the list, doing the most important jobs first, they always get things done ahead of time. To help you become more efficient in your work we present !Reminders. This handy program sits quietly on the desktop waiting for you to move the pointer over the icon on the top left of the screen. When the pointer passes over the icon it displays a short list of things to do. You can delete old items or add new ones and organize them in order of importance. ESM have kindly provided Archimedes World readers with a seasonal freebie. The XMas directory contains some festive Draw files which can be used to create Christmas cards or party invitations etc. There are some more high quality Draw files in the DrawFiles directory. They include a printer, telephone, poppy plant and T-Shirt stencil. The latter item can be used to demonstrate what a T-Shirt design will look like before it is printed on the fabric. Regular Features Software supporting the All At C, Programming the ARM and Five Alive series can be found in the Regular Features section of this disk. Viruses We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World and so we check our cover disks thoroughly to ensure that they are 100% virus free. Earn �800 We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Look inside the magazine for full instructions on how to submit programs to Archimedes World for publication. Ideas If you have great ideas for useful or entertaining programs but lack the programming know how then Archimedes World may be able to help. We can turn your ideas into working programs. Just send in your program description to us and we will evaluate it. It does not have to be very detailed, just clear enough to give us an accurate idea of what the progam will be able to do and what benefits it will bring. If you are on to a winner we will commission one of the many talented programmers we have on our files to write the application. Archimedes World will then publish the program for the benefit of all our readers and give both you and the programmer a handsome reward. So send in your program ideas to the usual Archimedes World address. One program which we are keen to publish is a window saving utility. This program would allow you to click on its icon and the currently displayed desktop windows will be saved to disk as a series of sprites. This would save having to cut out a window from the screen using the !Paint 'Get screen area' tool or exporting an area of a saved desktop screen. We are also looking for high quality line art created in !Draw for publication on the cover disk and also as part of our Image Library series. Public Domain If you are the author of a public domain program you will be interested to know that we are able to distribute your programs. By including your program on the cover disk you will reach an audience of thousands of Archimedes owners.
