DATAVISION� LITE ******************************************************* * This program is neither Shareware nor Public Domain * ******************************************************* Instructions written to accompany DataVision� Lite as appearing on the July 1993 Acorn Computing MegaDisk. The full manual of this product is available to Acorn Computing readers for �17.95 from Acorn Computing, Europa House, Adlington Park, Macclesfield SK10 4NP. How to use the program ====================== DataVision� Lite is intuitive to use, click on the Menu button over the iconbar icon to display the options available to you. Click Select to access an option, Adjust if you want to keep the menu window open. Opening files ------------- To view any of the files provided, select a file from the FileList sub-menu using the Adjust button. From the Browse sub-menu select Tabular Browse which will show the whole file as a table. If the message "file empty" appears this means that no data has been entered yet but the form has been designed. Creating a new file ------------------- From the Menu select Create. You will be asked to name your file which will be saved automatically to disk. Now enter the details for each field. Once a field name is entered you'll be prompted for the type of field you want, choose this with your mouse. Next enter the field length or press Return for the default value. When you have finished press Return in an empty field name space. Designing the data entry form ----------------------------- The Manual Design option will enable you to place fields and their titles in any position on screen by simply clicking Select. Choosing the key field ---------------------- Simply click Select over the field you want. This is the field which will be used to locate any particular record. Adding records to a file ------------------------ Select the file you want (a tick will appear next to it on the FileList and it will also appear in the FileName box) and via Add from the Menu enter the information for each field. Changing file information ------------------------- Use Modify, Delete and Sort to change information in the files. Try to Modify different fields by selecting Interactive Modify and from its submenu click on Select by Browsing. Relations in Financial Accountant --------------------------------- The Financial Accountant application is a demonstration of the powerful relational applications of DataVision� Lite. Using Relations described above you can customize the files. In all the accounting files provided relations are already defined for you. This means that an entry in one file will update all related files. For example, entering a sales transaction to a customer in the Sales Ledger will update the customer account balance, debit the stock and update the VAT records. Browse through the Customer and SLedger files. Notice that they have already been initialised for you to enter a customer called Cust1. Add a transaction to the SLedger for Cust1 and the Stock Code (dtv for DataVision� Lite). You'll notice that all the information that can be obtained from the other related files has been imported automatically such as VAT Code and VAT rate. Also enter the appropriate sales information and confirm the transaction with F8. The Credit Limit, Account Balance, Turnover and Stock files have already been updated. Queries ------- You can conduct five types of queries in DataVision� Lite and can be seen in the Queries option from the main menu. Generating reports ------------------ The Reports option allows you to produce columnar reports as well as labels. In addition you can both group and summarise your reports. This is particularly useful to organise and select fields of a certain file for demonstration or analysis. Creating macros --------------- In DataVision� Lite a macro can take action while you are entering data into a file either when you enter a particular field, or when you exit it. This is particularly useful to validate certain fields as they are entered. The word-processor ------------------ This is an easy to use system that can be used both as a word-processor and as a mail-merger allowing you to print as many personalised documents as you want. Importing and exporting ----------------------- The facility allows textfiles to be read or written to. From the DataVision� Lite menu select Import/Export. The Import option requires a source textfile and destination DataVision� Lite database filename.
