!NetMail/Info/ReadMess
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Displaying a message ==================== To display an individual message in your mailbox, double click over a field in the row in which the particular message is displayed (except the Marked field). Upon clicking the server will be contacted to send the whole message to you. A status window will appear to allow to monitor its progress. Once complete the message dialogue will appear. As with the mailbox listing the dialogue is split into two parts, the top static half which displays information specific to the message, while the bottom resizable part contains the actual body text of the message. The static section is best understood by dividing it into three sections, information, navigation and actions. Information section ------------------- The top field across the whole of the dialogue box tells you what sort of message it is and whether it has any attachments or has been so far unread. The Sent field tells you when the message was sent. The Size field gives the length of the message, both in terms of physical lines of text and the nearest kilobyte in stored size. The from field tells you who sent the message and from where. The To field indicates to whom the message is intended. The bottom field contains the subject line for the message. Navigation section ------------------ The buttons used for navigation are to the middle left of the dialogue box. Some will be possibly greyed out depending upon what message you are reading and where you are in your mailbox. The top button, Replying To, will display the message which this one replies to, and is only available when you are reading a conference. The Prev and Next buttons will display the previous and next messages in your mailbox. The First and Last fields will jump you to either the First or Last message in your mailbox. The Replies button is only used when in a conference, see later. Actions section --------------- The buttons used for acting on a message are to the middle right of the dialogue box. The top button, when unshaded, allows you to generate a reply to a conference message, to be sent to that conference. The Reply to Sender button allows you to generate a private reply to the person who sent the message. The New button allows you to generate a new message to some other person, with the opportunity to quote or use the text of the current message. The Delete option will mark the message for later deletion and move onto the next message in your mailbox. If a message has any attached files the static dialogue box will be extended to show the files and their icons ready to be drag and dropped as required. When you drag a file off to save it the server will be contacted to transfer the file, the time the transfer takes depends upon the speed of the network and the loading of the server, so the transfer could take some time. The transfer will have finished when the status window disappears. Disc icon --------- Clicking on the disc icon will bring up a save dialogue allowing you to save the text with a description header. Address Book icon ----------------- Clicking on the address book icon acts as a shortcut for adding the from address into the address book. Text menu --------- Associated with the text of the message a menu. The first option allows you to save the text of the message to a file. The second option, which is greyed out when the text is read only, allows you to erase all the text for a message.
