Helium He 2 4 0 1 -270 -269 sm Colourless gas Lockyer 1868 The word helium comes from the greek helios (the Sun). It is one of the inert gases, so very unreactive. Although it was first suspected by Lockyer in 1868, it was only really discovered later on by Hillebrand in 1895. It is sometimes used for gas mixtures for deep-sea diving. Lithium Li 3 7 1 2 181 1331 gm Silvery metal 1818 This is an extremely light alkali metal (relative density 0.53) and its surface tarnishes quickly if exposed to air.
