This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Welcome to the third thrilling issue of Archimedes World. We hope that the
software which we have chosen for this issue will be interesting,
entertaining and useful. Read about the programs in the magazine to
understand how to use them fully.
The programs !Morph, !PlayMorph, !Find, !Go and !LoShang are all copyright
Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or resold except
for the purposes of making a backup copy. Purchase of Archimedes World by a
school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. !ArcFS,
!DiscLabel, !Mode15!!!, !LuckyLuke, !Bounce and !TacRock are all public
domain.
Keep It Safe
Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup
so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you
can just make another backup from the original.
Archived
The '!AWApr91' application contains all the Archimedes World software in the
'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is
archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWApr91'
application, when de-archived, does not fit on a single floppy disk. You can
copy it to a hard disk if you wish and it will run perfectly well from
there.
Running
To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This
application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the
usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This
is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is
a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions
stated in the !Help and Legal text files inside the !ArcFS application
directory.
The version of !ArcFS on this cover disk is adapted slightly to open an
archive automatically. As soon as the desktop filer sees the !ArcFS
application it will open the archive ready for use. To allow you to use
!ArcFS with other archives you will need to change the !Boot file which is
in the !ArcFS application directory. The only change required is to remove
the last line of the Obey script. The line to delete is:-

This can be done by loading the !Boot file into !Edit and deleting the line
and saving the !Boot file to disk again. Only make this change on copies of
!ArcFS NOT on the original cover disk.
Copying
When the '!AWApr91' application icon is dragged to another disk it is
de-archived. To run the de-archived software from the RAM disk it will need
to be set to 1500k. Three to four megabytes of memory is required to
comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs
from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and
dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be
de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using
the disk menu.
Documentation
All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any
additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. The text
files can be loaded into !Edit and can also be displayed from the menu.
Using the Menu
The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read the
instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu
leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a
menu item. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop.
To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will
appear exactly as you left it.
Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click
once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can
be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as
they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer'
option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to
run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another
directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each
sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous
menu which is usually the main one.
The Programs
!TacRock is a demonstration of the asteroid sequence in Tacticus, a
fantastic new arcade game coming soon in Archimedes World.
The classic oriental tile game of Mah Jong has now arrived on the
Archimedes. !LoShang is for all puzzle game lovers. Remove tiles, two at a
time, from the stack until none are left. Sounds easy, but can YOU do it?
!Morph creates in-betweening or morph animations on the desktop. Draw a
picture in the first window and another in the second window. !Morph will
then display an animation showing the first picture slowly changing into the
second.
!PlayMorph displays animations created using !Morph on the desktop without
using as much memory as !Morph.
If you have a hard disk and find it difficult finding files in a complex
directory hierarchy then try !Find. It will search your hard or floppy
drives until it finds a file with a specified name. The full pathnames of
any files found will be output for you to read or print.
Hard disk users also find it a pain setting the current directory if the
pathname is long (eg *Dir :4.$.Games.Adventure.Fantasy.Hobbit). !Go solves
the problem by allowing you to set the current directory by dragging a
directory icon or a file to the icon bar.

Programming Demos
!Bounce is a playable demo from the Brothers In ARM. You control a bouncing
red ball and try to get as far in the maze as possible. It is great fun but
very addictive so watch out.
!LuckyLuke is a funny cartoon from Software Evolutions showing Lucky Luke
gun fighting with his own shadow.
!Mode15!!!, written by ARMaxess, is a set of graphical effects which really
show off the power of the Archimedes. Watch what happens to the Process
logo, it is absolutely amazing!
Brush Strokes
The various stages of the famous Van Gogh self portrait are presented as a
delta animation. It is related to the Brush Strokes article in the April '91
issue of Archimedes World. In the article Peter Clements explains how to
imitate the Van Gogh painting style on the Archimedes.
Nearly Free
To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included one of the
Public Domain programs detailed in the Nearly Free article in the April 1991
issue of Archimedes World. The program is called !diskLabel. It makes
designing and printing disk labels a doddle. The program is included as a
free piece of software. As it is public domain you are free to copy the
program as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you choose.
This only applies to the !DiskLabel, !ArcFS, !Bounce, !LuckyLuke, !Mode15!!!
and !TacRock applications.
Earn �800 From Your Program
We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are
interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art
sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else
that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software
for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Look inside
the magazine for full instructions on how to submit programs to Archimedes
World for publication.
Wanted
We would like a Risc-OS text display utility. It should operate in the same
way as !Edit but without any editing facilities. Print, search and save
options are essential.
