This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

MicroCODIL History Project pack R.McDermott

BBC Telesoftware - Reviews for Education:

Software: MicroCODIL ; History Project disc

Supplier: CODIL Language Systems

Other equipment needed: Disc drive

Review by R.McDermott: (Teacher, Comprehensive School in Essex).

MicroCODIL is an intelligent data base language which could be of use to
teachers of history and geography and any other subject in which large
amounts of data are handled.

Data bases can be built up containing a variety of information and
interrogated with suitable commands. Several data bases are provided on
the programmes disc and the user can work through these to familiarise
themselves with the operation of the data base:

The FARMER data base: this has been compiled from the 1871 census and
contains a lot of information about the farms and farmers of Sandridge in
the 19th century. Typical information contained in one record is the
name, occupation, relationship (to another person in the data base) and
address of people living in Sandridge at that time.

The DEVON data base: this is a similar data base containing information
about people living in a certain region of Devon. This information is
arranged in a different manner and is a little more extensive than that
for the Farmer data base.

The PRISON data base: this data base has been compiled from information
on the inmates of Aylesbury prison taken from the 1851 census. This data
is particularly accurate since prison records are highly ordered and
normally meticulously kept. This makes this type of information
particularly suitable for incorporating into a data base.

The KINGS data base: this provides a simples name and date facility
recording the names and reign of different English monarchs for over a
century.

The INVENT data base: this contains details of inventories from between
1669 and 1709. Thus lists of the property people owned at the time they
died can be listed and provides an insight into the way people lived.

The data base itself can be searched in a manner which those familiar with
other data bases used in schools (i.e. QUEST, and INFORM) will be
acquainted. I found this process particularly difficult with this data
base even though many of the facilities are menu driven.

The handbook is comprehensive and fairly well laid out, though at over 240
pages long one can gather that it is a not inconsiderable task attempting
to learn how to use it. There are many useful examples of the things that
can be accomplished with MicroCODIL: most of the usual database
applications which involve the searching for and comparison of information
plus the compilation and searching of databases containing relatively
unstructured information.

Any language for the interrogation of data bases must be learnt by the
user, and the simpler and more obvious the commands are, the easier it
will be for the user to use the data base to its full. Unfortunately
MicroCODIL fails in this regard. It is nevertheless potentially superior
to many other data bases both in the way it structures the information and
allows more complex searches. Speed is adequate and disc accesses not
too frequent.
