Translator/!Translatr/!Updates
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Updates since version 4.00 4.01 : - Removed bug when decoding GIF in screen memory after selection of low resolution mode followed by higher mode for image 4.10 : - Considerable speedup and better memory management for GIF decompression. No more decompressing in screen memory necessary. 4.20 : - Minor bug removed : Atari and Mac pics always indicated same Archimedes mode regardless of mode actually used. This was right for multisyncs, but not for normal monitors. - Mode handling changed : a) Translator will not complain anymore when working in a screen mode not having the required number of colours to display the image properly, but in these modes (use 'Info' to see the required number of colours and the 'ideal' mode) Translator will not attempt to correct for the situation, so image display and saving will not be right. The user is encouraged this way to choose a mode with the required number of colours him/herself. Also, the desktop palette is selected in these modes, and Translator will complain if the user attempts to select the image's palette. b) When the closest mode to display the image (depending on your monitor type) could not be selected by Translator (usually because of screen memory shortage), it will complain as usual, indicating the required number of colours for the image. The user may then select a suitable mode. - 'Auto mode select' flag icon added. When ON, Translator will select the most suitable mode automatically. When OFF, Translator will not do this, so the user must choose their own (using the number of colours/mode info under 'Info' icon). 4.21 : - Minor bug removed : GIF image width and height was taken to be equal to raster width and height (which is not always so). - Quitting Translator before closing image window resets palette correctly to desktop palette. - Image window title ('Image <filename>') does not determine the minimum window's width anymore, so it can be smaller. - Bug removed : 2-colour GIF images are decompressed right now. - Save window now closed when image window closed.
