PandaGame/!Panda/ALPS/Text

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

To the north is a public house.
To the south is another street.outside a public house, the Mighty Chestnut.

The bricks are gray, the window frames need painting.
Here and there a window is cracked or broken.

inside in the Mighty Chestnut.

The pub is dark and dingy, and smells of beer and old socks.
An old man is sat to your right. There are no other customers.
aa glassstill inside the pub.
The smell of old socks is much stronger. Your nostrils wish you had 'flu.

North are the toilets.aThe glass contains beer which has a small head, little body, no arms or legs:
...a typical Titbread beer.

Real ale this is definitely not. Crumbs! You're in the Ladies loo.

The stench of old socks is over-powering. Your nostrils close and seal to
your cheeks. Stumbling forward and unable to breathe, you fall head-first
into a toilet.

Just before you lose consciousness, your eyes open long enough to see the
contents of the porcelain ... lots of old rotting socks. Yechhh.

As you expire, you wonder what the Gent's loo must be like.aa beer glassin a poorly-lit, dank corridor leading to the toilets.

Along the skirting boards are mouse droppings. Nearer the end of the
corridor are what look like sheep droppings.

The smell of stale socks is very strong indeed. Your nostrils are throbbing.on a mission to find the Chair Bear of Panda Discs.

This will involve exploring and finding your way to Micro Computer World: a huge shopping emporium for computer users. There you will discover many names that sound strangely familiar, including "Conker Computers" and "Conker Computing" magazine.

First things first, however.

At this precise moment you are 30 feet up a rope which is not attached to anything ... I see that this comes as something of a surprise to you.

What are you going to do?at a street corner.in a narrow street. To the west, is a wall with a glowing box in it.at a ticket dispensing machine. Over the device is a sign reading:

"Get local bus tickets here."Instructions written on the machine say

"Insert a one pound coin for a ticket to travel anywhere."at a major road junction. Roads lead off in three directions.

There is a bank on the corner.in the street outside the National River Bank.
The bank is shut.

Through one window you can see the bodies of various furry animals: They seem to have been vilely mutilated. Through another window you can see the various discarded rear appendages of the poor animals.

Walking away, you realise this must be a sick re-make of "Tails of the
River Bank". (You wonder if the jokes can get worse.) (They can!)
in a street. The National River Bank is to the west.

Around you are more streets. The street to the east looks very dark.in a street.in a street. It looks lighter to the West.in a street. To the south you can see a bus stop.at a bus stop.A notice on the bus stop says "Ticket holders only may travel".a torchThe torch is a battery model. It looks pretty old, so use it sparingly.an old torchActually, the glass is empty.dYou drink the beer.
Hmm. A naive little ale, reminiscent of cat urine.

Not entirely lacking in body though .. there's a dead slug at the bottom of the glass.AARRGGHH.

You are plummeting earthwards to a well-deserved and splatty doom.

It's a rope you're clinging to, for goodness sake, not a climbing frame.

Phew! The glass falls and smashes into .. er, 27 pieces.A right little "Yes Person", aren't you?"I've already told you my advice.
If you've got no more beer, bog off!""Well, if you hadn't knocked that ale down your neck, I could have had it.

If you want my advice, bring me some beer."The man takes and drinks the beer.
"Thanks.
"Right, here's my advice which should help you in your tireless quest.

"You must heed what happened to old Jake, who lives barely a lemming's throw away from here. He'd been having a rough time, what with the recession and his problem with incessant wind and profuse bodily hair.

"Anyway, keeps a small holding does old Jake, and I don't just mean his pocket billiards set. So, one morning his old ram is looking particularly poorly. Jake goes off to his job at the sewerage works .. has ambitions to join the effluent society, does Jake. He's doing so well at cleaning out the cesspits, they reckon they'll give him his own brush next Easter.

"Back home that afternoon, Jake's ram is right off his business. By evening, both the ram and two of his best ewes are not too great. Later that night he does the dreadful deed and buries all three of them ... and by morning, they were all dead."

You are momentarily stunned, as the true worth of this advice becomes clear to you. There seems nothing else to do but move on.The old chap stares at you with a wicked, almost hungry leer.

This is quite unusual as, in the main, a leer is used in the ancient process of annealing glass.
a manYou can't take him .. you don't know where he's been, though you may be about to find out.Talking to yourself again? It won't help. The old man looks up at you, then says:
"For a drink of beer, I'll give you some good advice. Do you want advice?""Don't talk to me, you vandal. I saw you smash that glass."The old man grunts: "I'm too thirsty to talk to you."a pile of old rubbishThis is a pile of big heavy bits of smelly rubbish. It is mostly old vegetables and containers. Among the rubbish, you think you can see something metallic.a one pound coin.
THE BATTERY IS FLAT.The torch is already on.The torch is already off.The coin clunks into the machine. After a few seconds, a ticket appears.I don't think that's a good idea.Well done. The rubbish moved a little. Worth another look now.The rubbish did show signs of moving. Try a little more effort.

busa red busThe bus is going to "PC World".a green busThe green bus, which has a picture of an Horse Chestnut on the side, is going to "Micro Computer World".a blue busThere is no bus here to board. You board the bus and hand in your ticket.

You sit down and pass a fairly uneventful few minutes, postulating on the fact that all the people you know that don't own an Acorn RISC computer are unable to play this game.
For just a second you wonder who the mug is!

Grateful for the technology at your fingertips, you realise the bus has reached its destination.
You cannot board the bus without a ticket.PC World. The shops have clearly been closed for some while, and judging by the dust everywhere, it is a long time since anyone bothered to walk round here.
outside Micro Computer World.

This is a large shopping mall, in which lots of computer-based companies have their showrooms.in the foyer of Micro Computer World.

It seems as though the majority of shops are closed but, being a curious sort of a soul ... coupled with the fact that there's no way out now that you're in .. you feel inclined to wander around looking at the window displays.

To the west, you can see a grand entrance labelled "PANDA DISCS". It looks very posh and affluent. (It's my game, so it's my dream!).

To the south is a sign reading "Hardware and Operating Systems".

To the east, a further sign reads "Conker Software Houses".

at the end of the "Conker Publishers" mall.outside DibDob Computing.

Inside the window is an advert for "Tracey". The advert says that TRACEY can take a sprite picture and turn it into a draw file of a Thunderbirds character.

Closer examination of "Tracey" may provide an example.a TraceyWhat an unpleasant little puppet. I wonder who's pulling his strings?

outside Eclairs.

In the window is an advert for Rhapsody12 -- a ray-traced music package. Also advertised is "Clary -- Gender Bender II".outside Computer Self-Actualisation Notions.

In the window, you can see an advert for IMPRESSIONIST. This is a Rory Bremner speech podule, which reads text files in a range of famous voices.

Also in the window is "Manning" -- a new thesaurus that provides a choice of rude words for any that you type in.

At the back of the window you can see "Art Pays" and "LazerUs Directly".outside David Pilsner.

In the window you can see an advert for "Sparked Out" .. a particularly strong lager. Three pints makes everything seem smaller.outside Superlative Software.

In the window you can see a copy of "Play It Again Sam 71".

Also in the window is "Repton", a map game all about a small village near Burton-on-Trent.outside Cross-Bred Technology.

Through the window you can see packs of the computer game "Effete" and old Music 5000 AMPLE posters for the BBC Micro. Why no RISK version, you ask?a gray shoe boxThe box is very dusty. You wipe it to reveal the words "Music 5000".outside "Shortens Software".

Following the success of 'The Crystal Maze', you can see that Shortens have boxes of a new computer game based on a television programme. It features The Duckworths: Ninja Vera and Jumping Jack, Riotous Reg, Cavorting Curly and featuring Bionic Don - the man with fake legs who walks perfectly and drives a taxi.outside "Alpen Software".

In the window you can see a box titled "Alpen - the high fibre adventure game writer".

(This "!Panda" game actually contains as much fibre as 5 bowls of prunes .. er, just excuse me a minute!).outside "Butterfly Software"

In the window you can see games: Hamsters, Oh No Not More Hamsters, I Don't Believe it - More Bleedin' Hamsters, Hamster Infinity, Dutch City That Sounds Like Puree Of Hamster, Oh No I've Just Stood On The Hamster, Hamster Tribes, and the brand new game ........ Gerbils.outside Chestnut Solutions.

In the window you can see Dueteronomy Plus,
Bonjour de France: Mme Fifi et sa Fantasies Sadistiques,
Chestnut JCB,
Letters (another French pack, making use of "hot text"),
WottaCAD (the story of a dishonourable parliamentary member),
and WottaNellie (the member's Secretary's, just as he told it to the Sun).outside a dusty shop called "Laserbug".

Through the window you can see a skeleton surrounded by lots of letters.a very old postcardOn the reverse of the postcard you can make out some writing. The writing on the postcard says "Dear Lazerbug, You haven't sent all my magazines. Please send me my money back."I can't read that, I'm afraid.outside Deadwood Publishing.

In the window you can see a pile of magazines: Nosh & Booze, Veggie Nosh, Posh Nosh, Holidays, and others.

At the back is a crumpled empty box labelled BBC Conker User.
outside Lo-RISK Developments. This looks like a DIY shop.

Inside you can see "Lo-RISK User" and "BeBig" magazines, a handsaw (DeskEdit), a hammer (hard disc companion), a sharp grinder (master-file) and grinder safety gloves (File Handling For All).outside the Publishers Corridor.in the HARDWARE AND OPERATING SYSTEMS corridor.outside MicroSaft.

The window has a notice which proclaims: "We are proud to announce Windows10, a new level of user-friendliness based on a British system called 'Arthur'".
Well, I suppose it's an improvement of sorts!
outside Banana Computers.

In the window is a display for the Banana Macintosh, which comes in black or yellow, 3 sizes, and with or without a hood.

Also in the window is the 'Banana Einstein', a little pocket computer that reads your handwriting. Also available is an advanced add-on module, so that it can also read your doctor's writing.outside PHC Computers Ltd.

The window contains the latest PHC (Pre-Historic Computer) with US-DROS (Unpleasant System - Doesn't Really Operate Sensibly).

Also in the window is what looks like a car battery. It's labelled "US-DROS emulator for Conker computers".outside Commandant Computers.

In the window you can see the Amigo Computer.outside Lord Clive's.

In the shop window you can see the rather elegant ZY-95: a no battery, self-pedal laptop computer. You have to hand it to Lord Clive: a new idea every year. (What happened to his other ideas?)

Also in the window is a display for the new 'Lord Clive Portable'. "Portable what?" you wonder. Actually, Lord Clive doesn't know himself yet ... he's onlly finished the handle.outside Conker Computers.

In the window you can see the latest simplified LO-RISK window environment called the "W". No icons, no menus and no pointers ... just a window. Not even a computer.

Also in the window is the DG (Double Glazing) memory expansion.a little computerThe little computer has a little Conker emblem on it. The bottom of the computer box has a label which says "Conker Computers A5 Pocket Computer".

The box has a cavity.a miniature windowThe little window contains the latest LEG8 technology .. there's a dead spider in it!

This must be part of Conker Computer's streamlined WIMP .. without the IMP.

Amazing .. just how much smaller can these things get?at the end of the Hardware corridor. Left is PANDA DISCS; right is the publishers corridor.at the rear of the Panda Discs emporium.

A 'No Entry' sign is in front of you.at the entrance to PANDA DISCS.

To the west is an open doorway with liquid dripping from the door top .. looks risky. It's hard to see through the pouring liquid, but you can make out a large black and white shape.

South takes you to a series of display areas for the wonderful range of PANDA DISCS products. Pay attention: there may be a questionnaire later. You wander through the shimmering doorway .. which is a special security device to protect the Chair Bear of Panda Discs.

As you are not wearing any protective clothing, you are vaporised within 1.75 seconds.

During that second and a smidge, you think you can smell warm vegetation and hear the sounds of mastication (that's posh for chewing: not what you thought!).

Odd that. What a sad end.
a red doorThe door is just over six feet high, metal, and three feet wide.

There is no handle, though there is a key hole. And, well..you know: it's a door, for goodness sake. Okay. It's painted in that rather bright colour, but it's just a door.

I think I prefer wood doors, myself.Inside the A5 is a little window. The lock clicks and the red door slides smoothly open.in the XWORD room.

Xword is a multi-tasking crossword creator and solver for the Acorn RISC computers. Words are inserted into the puzzle singly, from a text file, or from the supplied dictionary.

A BBC version is also available at 14-95.
A demonstration is available from Panda Discs price 1-50.

You spend a few minutes looking at this wonderful package. "If I ever get out of here, I shall buy XWORD," you decide wisely.an orange doora yellow doora green doora blue dooran indigo doora violet doora black and white costumea piece of musicAs you saw, this is a scrap of paper with a few notes of music on it.This is very high quality panda bear costume. It looks around your size.in the Viewdata room.

In this room are assorted teaching packages that make use of viewdata-style screens for learners to work from.

Some packages are designed to teach business students about using on-line communications systems, like to screens used by travel agents to book holidays.

Others provide simple data sources for children and students with learning difficulties: such as information about different jobs.
in the TOUCH AND LEARN room.

T&L is a concept keyboard package that is designed for teachers, their school's children, and adults with learning difficulties, to use and construct search and question packages.

T&L comes complete with a simple editor which generates stand-alone applications. An example is on the Panda Demo Disc #1.

TOUCH AND LEARN costs only 14-95. BBC version (also Domesday version) 9-95.in the Music Room.

Lying around are old BBC Micro discs: 20 AMPLE DCT Music 5000 discs, 3 music 500 discs and 3 island Logic discs. Only four pounds each.

In the devlopment area is a copy of Desktop Trucker and a few sheets of manuscript. Perhaps some AMPLE DCT music is being transcribed.in the Art room.

Around are discs of clip art and colour pictures scanned for Panda Customers. Send in your pictures (up to A4 size) to be scanned. 2.50 pounds a picture.in the Games Room.

Just a few "gentle games" in here. Easy exploration games, such as this one, and some designed for students with reading difficulties and other special needs.in the PC room.

This is not a very well-lit room, but it appears to be a test room for items of PC shareware and public domain items. Those found good for use on Acorn computers are posted out from here, along with guidance notes especially written for Acorn users. Discs are around five pounds and contain notes, tips, and often manuals in Impression format, for Acorn users.

at the back of the Panda Discs Emporium. What a disappointment ... there's no way in from here.in a room. Huh?The portly chewing panda moves to one side, and you move through into the presence of the Chair Bear -- the inspiration of PANDA DISCS.

You are a privileged being indeed. You notice, while wiping tears of joy, that your opticals are also bordered by the moistnesses of sadness...you have realised that your quest is over, the game is finished, the chief bear is found. What a bittersweet moment!! Relish it, though, as you dab at your damp bits.

We hope that you have been amused by this little exploration and that it was not too irritating. Come again soon, as Stephen Fry might have double-entendred.

The End.....The lock clicks and the orange door slides smoothly open. The lock clicks and the yellow door slides smoothly open. The lock clicks and the green door slides smoothly open. The lock clicks and the blue door slides smoothly open. The lock clicks and the indigo door slides smoothly open. The lock clicks and the violet door slides smoothly open. There are no further buses tonight. You have missed them all.in a room. On one side of the room is a rather handsome panda, chewing bamboo shoots. North is a door marked "Chair Bear", but it is blocked by the portly panda.

The panda speaks: "give me key of music colour".The bear looks disappointed and wanders out of the room.

The door shuts behind the bear, and you are destined to spend the rest of your miserable existence here. What a downer.

The game is over ... for you!! YOU'RE TRAPPED. The light goes out.Well done. The panda wanted the blue key because the sheet music shows the first few notes of "Love is Blue".

Pandas are not known for their up-to-date musical taste!
Now is not the time.in a dull room. There are bits of rotten vegitation here and there.a pandaThe panda is rather portly. Though he looks quite cuddly, he also looks pretty strong. You can't. The $o isn't here. You can't. That's the wrong thing to open this door with....GIVE WHAT TO WHOM??You are stuck mate. Perhaps you caught the wrong bus.You need to unlock each door with the appopriate key.You need to catch the correct bus.
There are only three buses running tonight.
There's no more beer. The room is dark and there's nowhere else to go.I have no help to offer at this stage.outside EuroProd Enterprises.

Through the window, you can see a newly painted room.

At the far end of the room is a very narrow bed. On the bed are two stacks of magazines -- Conker User and Conker Computing -- though it looks as though there is really room for only one. I'll bet one falls off soon!
