Global Effect Demo for Acorn User 1. This is a brief outline of some of the options for the game and how to play it. it is unfortunate that we can not give you all the information but it runs to 70+ pages, so we hope that what you find here will give you enough to start and then experiment. 2. Welcome to the long-awaited strategy game Global Effect. In this demo version the Battle Option, computer Player and 6 of the worlds have been removed along with loading and saving. However, the 2 worlds, PANGEA and FORESTED along with 2 of the Save a world Options POST INDUSTRIAL and GLOBAL WARMING, should give you a flavour for the full version. 3. To start the game, double-click on the !Global Icon and it will load onto the icon bar. 4. With the mouse selecting Menu will bring up a menu box; from here you can select Options. This allows you to select which language you wish the game to play in, sound effects ON/OFF, music On/Off. Clicking on Set will save your setting and the menu will disappear. If you change some setting and you wish to return to the previous one before you have clicked on set, then click on Restore. 5. The SETUP option will take you to the setup screen where you can choose your scenario from those listed above. If while you are playing the game you die and the game is not recoverable then you will have to re-enter the game via this option. As re-entry via normal double-clicking tries to carry on from the last game scenario and as it is not recoverable then you will die immediately. 6. The QUIT option speaks for itself. Now onto the game: 1. To enter the game double click on the Global icon on the icon bar. 2. The purpose of the game is to try and ensure that you build/recover the balance of the world to one of complete eco harmony. If you do not then the world will die and you will be given a status as to your achievements at the end. However, selecting the Info icon - the world with the letter I - will bring up a menu which you might like to explore. 3. You must watch your power that you have available to you while running the game, this is indicated by the blue vertical bar on the top left hand side of the screen. If you do not have enough power then you will be informed of this and you will have to wait until the game gives you some. Helpful hint: the yellow bar on the lower left hand side indicates you ECO state and if it is good then the bar is above the line, which means you get power given to you quicker, however below the line, power is returned more slowly. The two blue bars next to the yellow indicate whether the world is getting hot or cold, bar up is hot and down is cold. 4. To build cities you must ensure they have good supply of food, water supplies, recycling and power stations. There are tools available for you to choose from, in the tool window on the middle right hand side, using either the mouse ot the Page Up/Down keys you can cycle through these to select the one you wish to use. 5. Natural power is available all the time by either Solar or wind power, however, there is also the possibility of mining for coal, oil (land and at sea) and Uranium, used for nuclear power. 6. To find the location of these then there is an option on the Info menu that will allow to carry out prospecting for them, be careful as this needs a lot of power. You have 3 chances and if you are happy with the first exploration then simply click the Info icon to return to the INFO menu. Once you have found a source then you must mine it. Select the tool and if the mining is successful then you can build a power station, a store if needed along with reprocessing plants. You may need to connect some of these with pipes to convey either water or oil. 7. When you have power, city blocks will power up and new ones will be created depending on your power level and if the power source can cope with the number of cities. If it cannot then cities will power down for a while and new ones created will be given power. Cities need to be close to each other to get power, however you can construct a power cable network to get power to remotely-placed cities. If a city block is destroyed that is feeding a remote city then the power to the remote city will cease, to re-instate the power you need to connect it back up, see if you can find out how... 8. A natural power station will only power 20 city blocks unless you invest, then they can power up more. However, investing is again a costly venture, so unless you have lots of power, work out a more cost effective way of getting more power. 9. Once you placed a construction if you wish to find out more about it the in the tool window select the "?" and simply click on the construction that you wish to find out more about.
