This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Starting up
~~~~~~~~~~~
Big Book is an organiser for the home. It is simple and straightforward to
use, there are no complicated menu structures and information can be quickly
recalled without the need for long searching. The application is split up
into four main sections.
The sections are linked and use search facilities so that there is no need
to be flicking through pages from your old filofax. It transparently gets
rid of diary data that is over a month old with its unique 'rolling' year
plan. It warns you about birthdays and special events in advance and
addresses can quickly be inserted into any wordprocessor. It even dials
numbers for you.
Once loaded the application installs itself on the iconbar and is activated
by clicking SELECT over it's icon. A small window opens containing a list of
the different sections. Each section can be accessed by clicking SELECT over
its icon.
Book of days
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The main window for this section consists of a year plan for the next twelve
months, the previous month is also included for good measure. This window
can be scrolled around in the usual way to view the different days. Clicking
SELECT over a day will open a window for that day; This contains a list of
all the activities for that day.
The day's menu
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The menu contains three options: The first allows you to change the colour of
the day as it will appear in the year plan - this allows you to highlight
days for special occasions. Select the radio icon of the colour you want and
click SELECT over the OK icon. A category is associated with each colour
and these can be altered by changing the file 'Colours' which is stored
within the application directory. Simply load this file into !Edit, change
the file and resave it. The changes will take effect when BigBook is next
run.

Selecting the second option on this menu will add another entry for the day
and automatically open an editing window.
Editing entries
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you have added an entry, or have clicked SELECT over an existing one,
an editing window for that entry will open. The top writeable icon contains
the text part of the entry that will appear in the day's list. Clicking
SELECT over the arrows below will alter the time associated with the entry;
Although it will not be used unless the 'Use time' icon has been selected.
The radio icons represent the different types of entry - different icons
will be used with different types of entries. If you drag the LINK icon to
either an address or note window then this entry will be linked to that
window. Once this has been done a corresponding icon will appear next to
this entry in the day's list. Clicking over this icon will open up the
window that the entry has been linked to.
Clicking over the 'Delete' icon in the editing window will, well, delete the
entry. Finally clicking over the 'Close' icon will close the window and
amend the item in the day's list.
Book of days menu
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The year plan menu, which is accessed by clicking MENU over its window, has
only two options: The first prints the year plan if a printer driver has
been loaded - a few options are associated with this print option. The
Skeleton option will leave out all entries in the year plan, leaving just
the months and dates on the printed copy. If the Colourings option is not
selected then all the days will all appear with a white background. The
final option allows you to print the year plan over two pages. You can then
cut them and stick them together to produce a more readable output.
The second option simply saves all the current year plan data.
Book of Addresses
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This window is very straightforward and requires little explanation. You
enter a person's details in the editable icons pressing return after each
line; the arrow keys will allow movement around these icons. Clicking the
Dial icon will make the sounds that a tone-dialling telephone would make
calling the number. If you hold the telephone receiver near the speaker and
then click this icon the number will be dialled for you.
When the 'Advance notice' option is selected you will be told about this
birthday a few days before it happens. (The number of days can be set using
the Book of Settings). If the Book of letters icon has been selected then
this name will appear in the Book of Letters list; clicking on Display
record will display the letter record.
Clicking over the arrow icons at the bottom of the window will let you flick
between the records. Alternatively you can drag the dark grey scroll bar
around for quicker flicking. Clicking SELECT over Index will open a menu
whose structure contains all of the current records in alphabetical order.
Clicking on a name in this menu will display that person's record.
The address menu
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The address menu, which can be selected by clicking MENU over the Book of
Addresses window, is simple in structure: Add will add another entry. Delete
will delete the current entry. Sort will sort the current records
alphabetically. Save will save the current address data to disk. The search
option opens a simple search window. Enter the search string in the
writeable icon ('*' can be used as a wildcard option). Use the First, Next
and Previous icons to flick through matching records. To see how to use the

Exporting names and addresses
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Specials submenu in the Address menu contains two options. The first,
Insert at Caret will, insert the current record details wherever the caret
is currently located. So for instance if you had a Edit window open which
contained the caret and selected the insert option this record would appear
there just as though you had typed it in. The other option in this submenu,
Mark up birthday, will insert the current birthday into the year plan.
Book of Letters
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This window contains a list of all the people who have been marked in the
Address window as being in the Book of letters. It allows you to record when
you last wrote to people and when they last replied.
Clicking MENU over the window will open a menu which contains just one item
- Print. See the section on multi-print to see how to use this.
Clicking on a person will open a window for that person so that you can
alter the correspondence details. To set the dates click SELECT over the two
menu icons at the top right of the window. If you select 'Today' then
today's date will be entered. You can also type in a different date using
the writeable 'Other' submenu.
If you drop a file onto this window then it will be linked to this person
and can be run at any time by clicking on the file icon in this window.
The last option in this window, Display address, will open the address
window displaying the current person's details.
Book of Notes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a simple window where you can type in notes which can be recalled by
flicking through the notes or by using the search facility. The icons at the
bottom of the window are self-explanatory - the search facility is identical
to the that of the Book of Addresses. The same type of scroll bar as in the
Book of Addresses is also used. See the section on multi-print to how to
print the notes.
Multi-Print
~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a unique global printing routine used in this application. It
allows you to put lots of information from the Book onto one page. The parts
of the application which use multi-print are - Addresses, Letters, Days and
Notes. When the print option is selected from any of these parts a print
window will open. This shows a picture of a page with six dotted boxes
arranged on it. You can put up to six pieces of info onto one page - each
dotted box representing a section. At the moment the top-left box will
contain the info from the window in which you selected the Print option. You
can then either choose simply to print this as it is or alternatively drag
any of the remaining boxes to other windows to include their info on this
page. This way you can put six addresses onto one page or you might like to
put an address, today's diary and a few notes together.
Book of Settings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This window contains a list of options that affect the way the data is
presented. They are as follows: Colour weekends grey - this automatically
shades weekends in the year plan window. Auto 'Today' open - opens today's
diary entry whenever the year plan window is opened. Use fonts - this will
make the year plan window use the font Trinity rather than the system font.
Beep with alarms - what can I say? Birthdays - this is the amount of days
before a birthday occurs that you will be informed of it. Other field - this
is the title of the one but last field in the Book of Addresses. You could
set this to Fax or Email perhaps.
The options will take effect when you click OK although if you want to make
the changes permanent then click Save.
