This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

!Chopper is NOT Public Domain. It is Copyright David Holden, 1996. It
may not be used, copied, distributed, or otherwise made use of in any
way except as described below.
The complete !Chopper package consistes of four separate programs, the
two Acorn applications !Chopper and !Joiner and two DOS programs
SPLIT.EXE and SPLICE.EXE. Thses programs must not be distributed
spearately or without this file except where !Joiner or SPLICE.EXE are
placed on a set of discs containing a previousely split file by a
REGISTERED user of the !Chopper package. All references to !Choppper may
therefore apply either to the individual program or the complete package
according to context.
I offer absolutely no warranty or guarantee as to fitness for purpose.
So far as I am aware it works, but you use it entirely at your own risk.
If it misbehaves or trashes your data (it shouldn't) then I accept no
liability whatsoever.
!Chopper was written in rather a hurry after three people in two days
had phoned to ask for a program to do exactly what !Chopper does. There
are some in the Public Domain, but none of them are what I consider of
professional standard, and so I decided to write one.
This is therefore released as Shareware, which means that it is
Copyright software, NOT Public Domain. It may only be used and
distributed under the following conditions.
1. You may use !Chopper for a trial period of no more than FOURTEEN
DAYS. At the end of this time you must Register by sending the
Registration Fee of �5 (Five Pounds) to the author. To make this
easier I have made the last page of this file a registration form.
Just print this page, fill it in, and send it with your cheque.
2. PD libraries and others charging a minimal fee for distribution may
distribute copies of the complete !Chopper package. I would prefer if
you would contact me first so that I can ensure you have the latest
version. !Chopper must not be placed on any CD, magazine disc, or
sold for profit without my prior permission.
3. Under no circumstances must any version of !Chopper which does not
display a start-up banner be distributed. If you have a registered
version this means that you MUST remove the Chop_Reg file BEFORE you
pass on a copy. This file is for the personal use of a registered
user ONLY, and must not be given to any third party.
4. Except where a REGISTERED user places a copy of !Joiner or SPLICE.EXE
on a set of discs containing a split file no part of !Chopper may be
distributed by ANYONE separate from the entire !Chopper package. This
consists of !Chopper, !Joiner, SPLIT.EXE, SPLICE.EXE and the
introductory Read Me file. All applications must ALWAYS include all
their original documentation and copyright messages.
5. If you intend to use !Chopper to split up files for distribution by
any commercial organisation or where any fee is charged for the
service, whether in money or otherwise, then you MUST obtain a
licence before doing so. PD libraries and other organisations who
charge low fees for distribution will normally be granted this
licence for a single registration fee, but I reserve the right to
charge an additional fee where I deem it appropriate. Distributing
!Joiner or SPLICE.EXE in this way without such a Licence is outside
the normal licence terms.
5. It is understood that you use !Chopper entirely at your own risk

What !Chopper does
------------------
!Chopper performs a very simple task - it chops up large files on a
hard disc into chunks big enough to fit onto a floppy, and can then join
the chunks back together again. The main idea of this is to let you
transfer large files between computers, including different platforms.
(eg. PC's).
Normally you would put the 'chopped' bits onto a floppy disc, and join
up the bits from a floppy, and so this method is made VERY simple, but
you can also put the chopped files onto a hard disc and join them up
again from there.
Chopping to a floppy disc
-------------------------
To chop a file, select 'Chop' from the main menu or click ADJUST on the
icon and the 'Chop' window will open. Now just drag the file to be
chopped the the 'Source File' icon.
The destination will normally be a floppy disc, so click MENU ower the
Destination icon and select the floppy drive to be used (on most
machines there will only be ADSFS::0). Normally you will want to fill
the discs (whatever size they are) and so leave the First File and
Subsequent icons set to 'Fill disc'. Now just click on 'OK' and insert
discs as required. If 'Auto change' is selected you don't have to do
anything as each disc is inserted, !Chopper will automatically detect
that the disc has been changed. IF 'Auto change' is not selected then
you will have to insert a new disc when asked and click on 'OK' agaon.
If 'Verify' is selected then each disc will be verified after the file
has been copied to it.
That's all there is to is!
To join the files up again select 'Join' from the main menu or click
SELECT on the icon and the Join window will open. Make sure 'Auto
Floppy' is selected, chose the source drive (normally ADFS::0) and click
on 'GO'. Drag the icon from the SaveAs window to wherever you want to put
the joined up file (change the name first if you like). Now just insert
the discs in sequence. As with chopping files if 'Auto change' it
selected you don't need to do anything when you change discs, if it
isn't selected then you will need to click on 'GO' when you insert the
new disc.
When all the discs have been used !Chopper will still be asking for the
next disc (it doesn't know it's finished), so just click on 'Finished'.
Chopping to a hard disc
-----------------------
This is almost the same as chopping/joining to a floppy drive, but
instead of selecting a drive from the Destination menu slide the pointer
to the right of 'Other' and drag the icon in this window to wherever you
want to put the chopped file. You must then choose an actual size from
the First and Subsequent menus or enter an actual size in the windows.
Obviously 'Fill disc' won't be appropriate. (Note - the sizes actually
used are the amount of free space on a disc of the nominal size,
obviously some space is taken up by the catalogue, map, etc.)
The reason for it being possible to use a different size for the first
disc is that you might want to put something else on this disc - eg. a
ReadMe file describing the contents, a copy of !Chopper so you can join
them up again, etc. If you are chopping to floppy discs and you put
these on first it won't matter because !Chopper will just use whatever
space is free, but if you are chopping to a hard disc you will need to
ensure that the first file is smaller.
As before, now just click on 'OK'
To join up the files open the 'Join' window and drag the first file to
it and drag the icon in the SaveAs window to wherever you want the
joined up. When this file has been dealt with you will need to drag all
the other 'bits' to the window IN THE CORRECT ORDER. They will then all
be joined to the first one. When you have finished - click on Finished!
The 'bits' don't have to be on a hard disc, they can be anywhere. You
can therefore join up anything from any source. Files split with another
program (eg. on a DOS disc), join up textfiles, etc. (Beware, some file
splitter programs put a 'header' at the start of each file -!Chopper
doesn't).
Save setup
----------
If you click on this on the main menu then the state of the Verify,
Name disc and Auto change buttons in the Chop window and the Auto change
button in the Join window will be saved. They will then be set
automatically to this state the next time you run !Chopper.
Filenames
---------
When splitting a file !Chopper adds a numeric suffix to the name of
each section. If the original filename is more than 8 characters it will
be truncated to make room for the number. When you are joining up from
floppies in 'Auto' mode it therefore always 'knows' which file to look
for next, but it doesn't 'know' how many files there are, which is why
you have to click on Finished.
If you are chopping to a floppy disc then if 'Name disc' is selected
each disc will be given the same name as the file. This makes it easier
to find the correct disc when joining files but it is not used by the
program for disc identification so is not necessary.
DOS format floppy discs
-----------------------
These are dealt with slightly differently from Acorn format discs. As
DOS filenames can only be 8 characters long the trailing number system
used on Acorn discs is modified slightly and the numeric suffix forms
the DOS file extension, eg. MyFile01 on an Acorn disc would become
MYFILE.01 on a DOS disc.
It is assumed that you will only be chopping to a DOS disc (720K or
1.44Mb) if you intend to transfer the file to a PC. Although the Acorn
filetype will be set this will not be understood by the PC, so where
files are compatible (eg. GIF files, plain text, etc.) and there is an
equivalent file extension it is useful to be able to use this. In the
!Chopper application directory there is a textfile called DOS_Trans.
This contains a list of Acorn filetypes and equivalent DOS file
extensions. This file does not have to exists, but if it does it can be
used to translate DOS file extensions to Acorn filetypes and visa versa.
Each line of the table consists of the DOS file extension followed by
the Acorn filetype as a hex number. These should be one per line, and
separated by at least one space or a Tab character. Make sure that the
final line of the file has a terminating LF or CR. A short sample table
is supplied with teh program but you can easily extend this if required.
It obviously isn't possible to have a normal file extension because this
is used by the numeric suffix, so a different strategy is adopted. An
empty file called FILETYPE is placed on the disc and this is given the
chosen file extension. When joining a file !Chopper uses the file
extension of this file, in conjuction with the DOS_Types table, to set
the Acorn filetype. Similarly the companion programs which work on the
PC make use of the same system.
Problems
--------
Memory management is rather crude at present - !Chopper needs enough
free RAM for the biggest file, so you will need around 1700K free to
chop/join with 1.6Mb discs. However, the !Joiner program can work with
very little memory so people to whom you give split-up files can join
them even if they only have 1Mb.
Error handling is incomplete - some errors (eg, disc errors) are
recoverable, so if there is a disc error when chopping a file you
can simply change the disc and carry on, but others (eg. disc
errors when joining files) are not, which means that although the error
is trapped, you have to do the whole thing over again from the start.
When changing discs don't change the disc until AFTER you have closed
any 'Error' windows on screen, if you do !Chopper won't know that the
disc has been changed as it can't poll the Wimp while the window is
open. If you do then nothing will seem to happen, so just remove the
disc and put it back again.
Improvements
------------
Better memory management so that each section can be handled in more
than one 'bit' if requred. This will make it possible to chop to 1.6Mb
discs on a 2Mb machine.
Format discs. At present they must be pre-formatted, but it will be
possible to format each disc first (hence the greyed-out icons).
Better sprites - the present one was 'borrowed' from an anonymouse port
of the game NetHack.
'Blank disc' option to delete any files already on a floppy disc.
Any other sensible suggestions from users.
