VIEW/GEOGRAPHY/OVERLAY

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

The overlay mapping on the following pages contains a base
map of land use in Chipstead, the contour lines for the parish and
the soil types. I think this is a good technique to use because it
enables you to see correlations between more than two factors very
easily and quickly, and also each factor can be removed if not
required. I chose contours and soil type because I thought they
were the most likely to go together well - because they are both
physical factors and I think they both have some influence on land
use. From the overlay mapping I hope to see how the two factors
influence land use TOGETHER, and if they affect each other at all.
The overlay map is also useful for seeing how individual factors
influence land use as this is shown very clearly. If two
transparent sheets are to be used, I think that the contour one
should be placed over the soil type one because it contains the
contour heights which need to be seen clearly.

By looking at the two factors together I think it can be
seen that the clay occurs in the centre of the village and the
chalky soil can be found on the Downs surrounding the village -
the chalk band on the left should actually spread further
westward, making this easier to see. When the two factors are both
placed over the land use map, a number of correlations can be seen.
Housing seems to occur mainly on the high ground and the clay soil,
the pastoral fields can be found on the hilly, chalky land and the
arable fields mainly on the flat land with clay soil. Finally, the
areas of woodland seem to occur mainly on chalky soil but on both
flat and hilly land.
