Harrison/!FBackQTM/Docs/!ReadMe

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Q The Music patch for Flashback v1.00 Stephen Harrison, 1996
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This program was written in response to a plea in the software request
section of the excellent Acorn User PD column in the July '96 Acorn User
magazine.

Background
----------

Anyone who has played the Acorn version of Flashback, and has seen the
versions availble on the Amiga and PC etc. will have noticed there is a big
difference in one area... Music! The original Amiga version of Flashback has
excellent music, sound, graphics and gameplay. The Acorn conversion is equal
gameplay and graphics - if not better(!) with support for VGA monitors and
better graphics, but is sadly very lacking in the sound department - which
just happens to be one of the most important parts of this game!

An example of the poor playing of the music in the Acorn version is the
background music to the loading intros. If you have not seen the Amiga or PC
versions of Flashback you won't know that the USGold title page is meant to
appear in time to music, not seemingly randomly to a buzzing noise, as in the
Acorn version.

The cause of the problem in the Acorn version is the music player. The play
routine used in the Acorn version of Flashback was probably writen by the
game's author - which is always a bad sign, games authors should stick to
games, and let music player authors handle the music!

Solution
--------

Luckily all is not lost! The music files stored in the Flashback game,
although altered, still contain most of the original data from their original
ProTracker format, and with a little effort can be converted back to their
original glory!

This program, !FBackQTM, does just this, and converts ALL the music played in
the game, while it is running, into their original ProTracker format - fixing
badly converted effects and volumes as it goes, and sends the results to the
best ProTracker music player available for your computer, QTM, Q The Music!

Jingles in the game, although much more altered in the Acorn version, are
converted back to ProTracker format too, and are played by QTM using it's
'transparent sound system' which allows Flashback's sound handler to play all
the sound effects through the music.

The result... is a MUCH better game! Flashback's intro sequences are now
perfectly timed to the music just as on the Amiga, and the whole game
benefits from in-tune music, with much better timing and syncronisation!

How to use !FBackQTM
--------------------

To play Flashback with the new, correct, high quality sound simply run this
application, then run the Flashback game! Hard disc users can simplify this
even more by copying !FBackQTM into the same directory as !Flashback, double
clicking !FBackQTM will then load the patch and run the game in one go.

Note: This program only alters memory contents and does not modify ANY files
in the Flashback game, so it won't alter your original discs.

Apologies to: 1Meg users, deeply sorry guys, this won't run on 1Meg. Well it
will run, but Flashback won't run with it, if you see what I mean... Maybe
you should consider getting 2Meg? Humm but if you've managed to survive so
far with only 1Meg, you probably don't need 2..!

This program will definatley run on RiscOS 3.0 and above, but has not been
tested on RiscOS 2, as my RiscOS 2 test-computer only has 1Meg(!), but it
should run! If it doesn't I will release an update to do so as soon as
someone tells me about it!

Credits for !FBackQTM
---------------------

Q The Music v1.27, was written by myself, Stephen Harrison, otherwise known
as Phoenix. The latest version of which can be obtained from all good PD
libraries - see Acorn User PD page for details, and all good BBSs.

This program also uses the 'ProcessorVector' module, again written by myself,
on pre-RiscPC computers to provide SWI "OS_ClaimProcessorVector" to claim the
SWI vector. This is PD and available at the same sources as QTM.

Special mention to Andrew Clover of Doggysoft, without his excellent Desktop
Hacker program this patch would not have been possible!

Thanks to: Nathan Atkinson for suggesting in Acorn User that this would be a
good idea - I'd always thought it would be good to write such a program, but
had never thought anyone else would be interested!

Also thanks to Paul Wheatley for publishing the software request in the first
place, and for keeping the Acorn PD scene alive with his PD column! ;-)
