�CE CONCLUSION
In this final section I intend to state what I believe my
project has achieved and generally round off the project. From
carrying out my task I think I have learnt a lot and have began to
be more aware of some of the reasons for land use. Looking back
over my work, I think I made some points which can be stated here.
I think that the vegetation cover as a factor may not have
been a very good idea because in Chipstead if somewhere is woodland
it has to stay that way because of the Green Belt. However, this
factor does help to show the influence that the Green Belt has. The
'distance from communications' did have some bearing but again the
progress of housing along the main roads and railway were stoped by
the Green Belt. However, I do realise that housing will occur near
to communication lines, and shops will always follow to supply
goods to the houseowners. Overall I think that from the factors I
studied, gradient and soil type had the greatest influence on land
use - the contour lines especially because Chipstead is on two
different levels really, and this is one of the noticeable things
about it. The distribution of fields was especially relevant here,
and also the areas of woodland on the chalky soil.
By looking at the pie chart at the start of the project it
can be seen that Chipstead is mainly made up of woodland and fields
with shops only taking up about 1% of the total land use in the
parish. Obviously the reason why there is so much woodland and
farmland is because of the Green Belt and I found it interesting to
note its influence throughout my project. I think the reason why
the percentage of shops is so low is because there are many shops
in the surrounding towns, Coulsdon, Purley and Banstead. The shops
there are provide just general services such as newspapers and
groceries and everybody leaves the village to buy most things. The
two groups of shops in the parish are located in the housing sector
because that is obviously where they are required - they wouldn't
be much use in the middle of a field. Also, whilst I was carrying
out my project a number of arable fields were left fallow, as I
said. I should state here that I think this highlights well how
there are some unseen factors which influence land use too - ie the
demand for a product.
Just by standing and looking around Chipstead you are able
to see lots of fields and trees, and I think this shows just what
sort of a place the parish is. Therefore if this task was carried
out in a commercial town, a number of different results would be
found. That is why I don't think we can take any results as
completely accurate because they will always be specific to the
area studied - as I said. However, I do think that Chipstead has
just the right balance of houses, woodland, shops and farmland and
I think this makes for an interesting set of results.
As a final section I think some geographical theory should
be introduced to my project. This is what I have learnt at school,
and is really a set of ground rules for land use. For example a
gradient of less than 11' is ideal for crop growing and a gradient
greater than 18' means machinery can't be used. Also, I learnt
about the demand for products and subsidies which are paid by the
EEC to prevent farmers overproducing. My results tended to agree
with much of this theory, although again the Green Belt did have
some influence here.
Overall, I believe my project has achieved a lot and has
certainly opened up my eyes to the many reasons that a piece of
land is used for what it is. It has also brought me closer to human
issues such as the Green Belt and planning decisions, and I think
it has been a success.
