This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Load this application in the usual manner and click, using the 'menu'
button, on the icon. As expected a menu appears. For help on what item
selections do see below.
If you click on the icon with SELECT, the main window appears. This is
where you fill in the information about the floppy disc. At the bottom of
this window is a subwindow. This is where you enter data about the
applications on the floppy disc. The maximum number of entries allowed
is forty eight.
The grey arrows that point right, when clicked on using any button, open
a menu with various examples. You are not limited to these options and
you can therefore type anything you want into the boxes. The other arrow
buttons are used to move through the records and are explained by using the
!Help application.
Clicking on the icon containing the ADFS floppy disc drive sprite will
read the disc currently in drive 0. After the disc has been read, the
program will fill in the application list, disc name and free space icons
automatically. (This saves lots and lots of typing!!!)
As well as using these arrows to select a record, you can type a number
into the icon labelled 'Number'.
NB. This can be from the range 1 to 250.
The caret can be moved to the next icon by using the RETURN key.

Options
~~~~~~~
If 'Read contents of applications' is selected, then during disc scanning
the contents of any applications (in the root directory) will be read and
placed in the disc contents window.
If 'Read contents of directories' is selected, then during disc scanning
the contents of any directories (in the root directory) will be read and
placed in the disc contents window.
If both of the above two options are selected, then the program will read
all the files in applications and directories anywhere on the disc.
If 'Move to next record automatically after scanning disc' is selected,
then !DiscIndex will move to the next record, by itself, after you have
click on the floppy disc icon.
The two 'Window Options' are self-explanatory and will only come in force
after you click the 'Save Options' icon and then re-load !DiscIndex.
At the bottom of the options window, you can select how many records a file
contains. This value is stored within the file and comes into force as soon
as you click on 'OK' or 'Save Options'.
Printing
~~~~~~~~
The print window gives various options. There is a choice of qualities,
either Draft or NLQ (or RISC OS printer drivers for a 'Disc Label'),
along with the number of copies you require. You can also select what
type of output you want; either 'Disc Info Only', 'Full Detail' or 'Disc
Label'. These options are illustrated here:

Saving
~~~~~~
The save windows are standard RISC OS save boxes. Choosing the 'Video
Index' from the menu will save a Disc Index file that can be re-loaded
into the application at any time. Selecting 'Text' will save an ASCII text
file of all the records, this can then be imported into a DTP package or
word-processor for printing via the RISC OS printer drivers. This is useful
as the print code within the application may not work with some laser or
inkjet printers. You can save the whole file as text or just a selection
by entering the relevant record numbers.
Searching
~~~~~~~~~
Unlike !CDIndex (see Archimedes World June 1993), searching in Disc Index
is not limited by the fact that search strings have to becase sensitive.
You can carry out a search on either the 'Discname', 'Disctype' or
'Application' (ie. all the programs on th discs) field and when a window
appears with a list of record numbers you can click on any of these numbers
to bring up that record. It is possible to select a 'Disctype' to search
for by using the menu.
NB. Numbers in brackets indicate the number of times the search string
appears in that record.
Sorting
~~~~~~~
Sorting can be carried out on either the 'Discname' or 'Disctype'. Click
on "Go" to begins the sort process and the time taken depends on what
ARM chip your machine contains. The following table gives a approximate
guidline to the times taken:

When loading, a nice little window appears containing information about
this application and a "logo".
This program allows interactive help to be displayed by either !Help or
!Spy, but does not include help for menu items (as compatible with RISC
OS 3 only).
RISC OS 3 only - Closing a Disc Index window while holding SHIFT will
produce a normal iconised window with a personalised sprite instead of
a boring blank one.
