Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- December 1991 ------------- This is the December '91 issue of Archimedes World. All the software in this issue has been carefully chosen to give you a balanced selection of entertaining and practical items. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. !IVSearch and !Guardian are both public domain. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWDec91' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWDec91' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying When the '!AWDec91' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500k. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the disk menu. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text displayer module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read any instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a menu item. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer' option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Programs Quality text adventures for the Archimedes are a bit thin on the ground at present. We are pleased to present an adventure writing system. With it you will be able to create your very own adventures to give to friends or even sell. It is very easy to use, being fully menu driven. A set of four full adventures are supplied with the creator for you to play through. The examples also show how adventures are constructed. We are interested in publishing any adventures produced using this system. They need to be well written and original and if yours fits the bill then send it in for consideration. Keep an accurate record of all your personal finances with !Banker. Enter details about your monthly income and outgoings and the computer will calculate your bank balance. This program can even save you money if it highlights over debitting by your bank. This is a surprisingly common occurence and your Archimedes can help you avoid losing money through clerical errors at your bank. Use the program to check your statements on a regular basis to provide peace of mind. It is quite difficult to enter certain characters from the keyboard. The usual method is to press the Alt key and then type a three digit number on the keypad. This is not exactly much help if you do not know the ASCII number of the character you want. You have to go away, get out the manuals and look it up. !Char_Set is a desktop application which shows the full character set of any outline font. It also allows easy entry of characters not available at the keyboard. By clicking over a character on the grid it is entered into the current input focus. It is handy for quick entry of things like Dingbats symbols into a DTP document. !Hotkeys will revolutionise the way you use the desktop. With this straight forward application you can set up the keys on the keyboard to perform any task. No more typing commands at the * prompt. You can open directory viewers, delete files, save the screen, play sounds and much more, all with a press of a key. The main application window makes it simple to set up a command. You simply select a key on the keyboard diagram and enter the command. The key definitions can be saved and are automatically loaded when the application is started. Screen files are among the largest individual files that you will have in your disk collections. A large scanned image can be anything up to 300K or more in size. !Packer can help save disks by compressing a file, especially screens, to a fraction of their original size. You can set an option to have a compressed screen loaded when it is de-compressed. Being a desktop application the program is simple to use. Just drag the original file to the !Packer icon and the data will be compressed and saved. Shanghai was originally published in Archimedes World earlier in the year. This version works on the desktop whereas the original took over the whole computer. It is fully multi-tasking so you can play the game in between editing text files or creating DTP documents. Super Pool Playable Demo The 4th Dimension are second to none when it comes to producing quality sports simulations on the Archimedes. You do not have to take our word for it though as there is a playable demo of their new Super Pool game on this disk. Load it up and try it for yourself. We are sure you will soon be just as hooked on the game as the rest of us are. Air Supremacy Demo Although you cannot take part in this demo it shows clearly what Air Supremacy from Superior Software is like. Sit back, relax and watch as the computer pilot skillfully flies the air craft, zeros in on the targets with surgical precision and blows them out of the sky. Remember, it is the same computer pilots that you will be up against when you buy the full game. Regular Features The fantastic !Archrome art package published last issue had a few small bugs which have now been fixed. The new version of the main program file is provided on this disk. Full instructions on how to update your copy of !Archrome are provided. The Arcade contains several game cheat programs which will breath new life into those dusty old titles which you have given up playing. You can now see all of the levels and graphics in the most popular Archimedes games. To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included some Public Domain software called !Guardian and !IVSearch. They are included on the disk as free software. As they are public domain you are free to copy the programs as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you choose. This only applies to the public domain software on this disk. Viruses We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World. We check our cover disks thoroughly to ensure that they are 100% virus free. You may still become infected from another source and so we will be providing virus killer programs on a regular basis so that you are protected from the annoying inconvenience of infection. Two such programs, !Guardian and !IVSearch, supplied on this disk will remove any viruses you have on your disks and keep an eye out for new ones which may appear. If used properly they can prevent viruses spreading to your disk collections. See the !Help file in the application's directory for instructions on how to use it. Earn �800 We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/!Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Look inside the magazine for full instructions on how to submit programs to Archimedes World for publication. Ideas If you have great ideas for useful or entertaining programs but lack the programming know how then Archimedes World may be able to help. We can turn your ideas into working programs. Just send in your program description to us and we will evaluate it. It does not have to be very detailed, just clear enough to give us an accurate idea of what the progam will be able to do and what benefits it will bring. If you are on to a winner we will commission one of the many talented programmers we have on our files to write the application. Archimedes World will then publish the program for the benefit of all our readers and give both you and the programmer a handsome reward. Public Domain If you are the author of a public domain program you will be interested to know that we are able to distribute your programs. By including your program on the cover disk you will reach an audience of thousands of Archimedes owners. We often have some spare room left on the cover disk so why not let us fill it with your software? Software Sale The standard of software on this cover disk is very high and is typical of the quality of software which has been published by Archimedes World (and A&B Computing) over the last few years.
