and when I find any virus-like programs that could prove harmful to your
machine. If you have found a new virus, you would like !Guardian to destroy
it, please send me a copy, clearly labeled on a disc and I will try to 
ensure that future versions of Guardian will cope with it.

Aim :
=====
!Guardian will keep an eye on what is happening in the 'background' of your
Archimedes. It will ensure that no new application is loaded without your
knowledge. Having spotted a new application loading, a window will appear
informing you of the the new task, together with the option to 'kill' it.
On expanding the initial !Guardian window, extra options are provided with
which to check a specific disc for viruses that may affect the !Boot files
of applications. If found, the option to list and/or delete the dodgy !Boot
file are provided.

Note: When a dodgy !Boot file is found and you are given the option to 'Zap'
it, if you select 'OK' the entire !Boot file will be deleted. If you do not
want this to occur, make a note of the suspect !Boot file and then look at
it later using !Edit, taking into account, that if a virus is already in
memory, !Edit may in turn be affected.


Versions :
==========

   < 1.03 : Experimental (working) pre-release versions
     1.03 : First full-feature 'release' version
     1.04 : Wimp_Slot checking amended so as not to obscure a new task
            starting.
            The 'Extend' virus is automatically Zapped, if found in 
            memory when !Guardian loads, with no need for user intervention.
            Note that this means no modules with the name 'Extend' will be 
            allowed to survive when !Guardian is loaded.
     1.05 : Code added to reset machine if 'Extend' virus is detected.
            Small bug fix in !boot file disc search, where the line is
               printed out. Previous versions could backstep past the
               beginning of the file. This is now fixed.

            Please note, that the Extend virus doesn't appear to be that
            harmful, in that it doesn't delete anything, just adding 1k
            to the RMA space. If left un-checked, this will eventually 
            give a memory full error, this crashing your machine, as RMA
            space is non-recoverable.
            At the moment, if you 'Zap' a suspect !Boot file, it will be
            physically deleted. Whilst useful for destroying the virus,
            it is not useful if your program requires it's !Boot file.
            I am currently working on this and will release a new version 
            soon, that just deletes the naughty lines and adds a CHR$&FF
            to the end of the file (Extend will then think it has already
            been affected and then leave it alone in future). Please
            contact my BBS for up to date information of the progress of
            !Guardian.

Use :
=====
Not much user intervention is required to use !Guardian, and it can be 
included in your hard disc startup sequence if required. It's uses are two-
fold. Firstly, to inform you (in it's own window) of any wimp actions 
occurring, such as data-drags, tasks starting or ending, palette and mode 
changes etc. The window is always updated when an event occurs, but if a 
potentially harmful one occurs, such as a new task starting or some loading
going on somewhere, !Guardian will bleep and automatically open it's window,
informing you of what has happened. If a new task has started, which you
didn't want, then click 'kill task' to kill it off.

Secondly, making the !Guardian window full size, will reveal some extra
options. These will allow you to check a specific disc for any !Boot file
corruptions. Click on the drive number to toggle between the various disc
drives - if you have more than one. The default is zero.

When you click on 'OK' the drive will be checked, and any suspect !Boot
files highlighted. If a dodgy one is found, you can either list it or Zap 
it (taking into account the note above for versions 1.04 and above).

As I hope to check for all possible viruses, please forward any relevant 
information onto me if you think you've found a suspicious application that
!Guardian doesn't cope with. I know it's an unusual request, but I would 
welcome anyone to send me copies of any viruses they may come across. This
way, I can constantly amend !Guardian to 'take care' of any nasty ones.
If you do send me any (or upload any to my BBS) please make sure they are
properly labeled.

As always, make sure you keep regular backups of any important files, and
it's best to do a CTRL-RESET before doing the backup.
