StarInfo/Ripley/!MailFormt/!Help
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

!Help file for !MailFormt - The BBS Mail Formatter... ----------------------------------------------------- Stryker Software 1997/8 Written by Jon Ripley Version 1.50 This application lets you prepare your BBS mail much more quickly. !MailFormt is a helpful application (ie it gives help through !Help or similar applications.) Typing mail to upload to your favourite BBS can be a tedious task, you have to remember which headers to use and sometimes you have to type 'Subject:' before the subject or even include a password. !MailFormt was written to take all the hassle of writing mail. Just type you mail, following the guidelines below, and then load the mail into !MailFormt and it will do all the hard work for you and give you a copy of your mail file that is ready to upload to the BBS. Section 1...Typing your mail ---------------------------- When you are typing your mail you don't even need to have !MailFormt loaded, just use your favourite text editor (!Zap, !StrongEdit, !Edit, etc) and save your mail as a text file. You can even type your mail on a BBC or an IBM PC, !MailFormt doesn't mind at all! !MailFormt even fixes the double linefeed bug that many BBSs suffer from when uploading mail so if your paragraphs have been squished together in the past, they won't be anymore! - Unless you want them that way! 1. Writing an e-mail -------------------- Just preceed the e-mail address with a '>' and type the subject on the next line. There is no need to type 'Subject:' and if you are using Arcade BBS, you don't even have to type in your password. !MailFormt does all this for you! Here is an example ... >nobody@just.a.test.com This is the 'Subject'. Hello there nobody... Your message! Bye! 2. Writing a message to send to another BBS user ------------------------------------------------ Just preceed their user name (or user number) with a '>' and type the subject on the next line. There is no need to type 'Subject:'. Here is an example... >Joe Bloggs This is a message! Hello there Joe Bloggs. Your message! Bye! 3. Writing a netmail -------------------- Just preceed the netmail address with a '>' and type the subject on the next line. There is no need to type 'Subject:' and if you are using Arcade BBS, you don't even have to type in your password. !MailFormt does all this for you! Here is an example... >Any Person at fidonet#1:234/56.7 This is the 'Subject'. Hello there.... Your message! Bye! 4. Writing a message to a BBS echo area --------------------------------------- Just preceed the echo area number with '>@' followed by the echo number and either '->' followed by a name or '#' followed by a message number. Type the subject on the next line. There is no need to type 'Subject:'. Here is an example reply to message 12345 on area 67... >@67 #12345 This is the 'Subject'. Hello there.... Your message! Bye! Here is an example message to 'Joe Bloggs' on area 67... >@67 ->Joe Bloggs This is the 'Subject'. Hello there.... Your message! Bye! Instead of a name you can type 'All' instead to send the message to everybody. 5. Writing any type of message using a name in your address book ---------------------------------------------------------------- A bonus of !MailFormt is that it contains a unique address book that you can store all the strange e-mail/net mail/etc address's that you use. See Section 3 for more information. For example if you had an Uncle Jon who's e-mail address was 'uncle.jon@somewhere.somewhere-else.co.uk' you could just put his e-mail address in your address book and choose to type 'Uncle Jon' instead of having to remember his e-mail address! All you need to do to send a message to someone in your e-mail book is preceed their name (or whatever you have chosen to call them) as it appears in your address book with '>>'. Note: Don't worry about getting the upper/lower case letters perfect, 'Uncle Jon', 'UNCLE JON' and 'unCLe JoN' would all be accepted - if you had an Uncle Jon in your book! An example message to 'Uncle Jon'... >>Uncle Jon This is the 'Subject'. Hello there.... Your message! Bye! General Guidelines...(Rules!) ----------------------------- You can have as many messages in one text file as you like. Just follow each message with another. It's that easy! You can mix and match the normal BBS mail headers with the 'easy' ones that !MailFormt provides. Not that you'd want to of course! If you want to include uuencoded files with your mail just do it! You can only use '<' and '>' as the first character in any line if it is the start of a mail header, this is because either !MailFormt or your BBS will think that you are starting a new message. You can use them anywhere else in a line though! Section 2...Formatting your mail -------------------------------- Once you have typed your mail and saved it you should now load !MailFormt. Drag your text file onto the !MailFormt icon on the iconbar (or into the main program window if it is open). The name of your file will appear in the window. The name of your mail file appears next to the 'mail file' icon, this is the file that !MailFormt will reformat. Now you should choose the BBS that you are going to upload your mail to, to do this click the SELECT or ADJUST button on the 'menu' icon next to the name of the currently selected BBS. A menu will appear with a list of BBSs in, click on any of these to choose your BBS. (The name of the BBS will appear in the main window.) If you choose 'Arcade BBS' you will need to type in your e-mail password in the 'password' icon. All you need to do now is click on the 'Reformat' icon. A 'save box' will open up and you can use this just like any other 'save box'. Just type in a filename and press RETURN, click on the 'OK' icon or drag the icon to a directory display to reformat and save your mail. You can also drag the icon on to almost any other application that accepts text files, although your computer will need to have seen a copy of the '!Scrap' application in order to do this. Your mail is now ready to be uploaded! (Remember to upload the reformatted mail file and not the original!) If an error occured when you tried to save your mail don't worry, no harm has been done and all you need to do is fix the error (such as choosing a BBS etc) and try again. The 'save box' will remain open until you close it or your mail has been saved! Special Features ---------------- In the main window next to your 'mail file' filename is an 'Edit' button. If you click on this icon your mail file will be loaded into your text editor ready for you to make any changes! Clicking on the 'Clear' icon will clear the filenames and password. But not the current BBS. See Section 3 for information about the address book and Section 4 for information about the BBS data file. Section 3...The Address Book ---------------------------- A unique feature of !MailFormt is that it contains an address book which you can cram full with all the user names, e-mail address's, net mail address's, echo area names, etc that you use and instead of having to type the FULL address you can type in one of two alternatives you can choose to use. In fact, any 'address' that you can send mail to you can include in your address book. To use a name that you have in you address book you just preceed the name with '>>' instead of '>', simple! For example, if you have a friend called Joe Bloggs with an e-mail address of JBloggs134@compuserve.nuts you could put his name in the address book. His entry in the address book might be: Joe Bloggs,Joe,JBloggs134@compuserve.nuts Instead of having to type (and remember) his e-mail address each time you want to send a message to him you would just need to type '>>Joe Bloggs' or '>>Joe'. !MailFormt does all the hard work for you. Plus there is no need to worry about matching the capital/small letters since 'Joe Bloggs', 'JOEBLOGGS' and 'jOE BlOgGS' would all be recognised. To edit your e-mail book just click on the 'Edit Address Book' icon, your address book will be loaded into your text editor and you can make any changes or just take a look. The Format Of The Address Book ------------------------------ Instead of having a complicated set of windows to edit your address book and using a strange layout for the file, !MailFormt's address book is a normal text file that you can edit in any text editor. Each entry in your address book consists of two names and a mailing address each separated by a comma (and no space). Having two names allows you a bit of flexibility, you don't need to use both names just one is fine but for instance if you have a friend called 'Jon Ripley' you could use his full name as the first possibility and 'Jon' as the second, or even the other way around! A mailing address can be anything that you could normally send some mail to. You just need the bit that you would type after the '>'. It could be an e-mail address, a net mail address, a private BBS echo area address or even just someone's user name. Lines beginning with a '#' are ignored, this allows you to have as many comments in your address book as you need. Blank lines are also ignored. This is to allow you to lay out your address book in a way that suits you. Some examples of possible entries in your address book are... # This is just a comment so it will be ignored... Jon Ripley,Jon,jonripley@arcade.demon.co.uk JB,Joe Bloggs,J Bloggs at fidonet#1:234/56.7 Alison,,Alison Anybody Science,Sci,@15 ->All The first is an e-mail address, you could use '>>Jon Ripley' or '>>Jon' instead of typing '>' followed by the e-mail address. The second is a fidonet address, again you could type '>>JB' or '>>Joe Bloggs' instead of typing '>' followed by the net mail address. The third is a regular user name (ie, someone on the same BBS as you), instead of typing '>' followed by her full user name of 'Alison Anybody' you could just type '>>Alison' The fourth one is an example of a private BBS echo area message, for example if there is a Science echo from the internet on BBS area 15, to send a message to it you just need to type '>>Sci' or '>>Science' instead of a '>' followed by the echo address. If you have altered the address book and you want to use it 'now', just click on the 'Use New Book' icon. Your new e-mail book will be loaded into !MailFormt. If you want to edit the address book without having to use !MailFormt is simple, just open up the !MailFormt application by holding down either SHIFT key while you double click on the !MailFormt application. Inside is a text file called 'EMailBook', this is your address book, just edit it as you would any other text file. If you want to pass on this program (see Legal bit below) you can restore the address book to it's initial state (ie, with only my address in it) just delete the 'EMailBook' file and run the program. A fresh one will be created. At the moment there is a maximum of 700 address's, this is just to keep the amount of memory used by the program to a comfortable minimum! I think that 700 should be enough for most people! Section 4...The BBS Data File ----------------------------- A new (and unique) feature to version 1.50 of !MailFormt (and later versions) is its ability to prepare mail for uploading to almost any BBS. I shall refer to this BBS data file as the Choices file (as this is it's filename.) As long as the BBS uses a similar upload format to the BBSs already in the Choices file, all you need to do is add the mail upload headers (available from the SysOp (or helpfiles) of the BBS in question) to the Choices file and !MailFormt will be able to reformat your mail for this BBS! The Format Of The Choices File ------------------------------ The format of the Choices file is very similar to that of the Address book and can also be edited in any text editor. Each entry in the Choices file consists of the name of the BBS followed by the mail headers each separated by a comma (and no space). Lines beginning with a '#' are ignored, this allows you to have as many comments in your Choices file as you need. Blank lines are also ignored. You can load the Choices file into your text editor simply by clicking on the top 'Edit' icon (next to the name of the current BBS) in the main !MailFormt window. If you have altered the Choices file and you want to use it 'now', just click on the 'Use New BBS File' icon. Your new Choices will be loaded into !MailFormt. If you want to edit the Choices file without having to use !MailFormt is simple, just open up the !MailFormt application by holding down either SHIFT key while you double click on the !MailFormt application. Inside is a text file called 'Choices', this is your choices file, just edit it as you would any other text file. If you want to pass on this program (see Legal bit below) you can restore the choices file to it's initial state. Just delete the 'Choices' file and run the program. A fresh copy will be created. At the moment there is a limit of 100 BBSs, I don't think that this should be enough for all but the most hardened comms freaks. Section 5...Legal Bit --------------------- This program is freeware (NOT public domain), copyright remains mine at all times. This program may be freely copied as long as it remains unaltered (with all the files intact) and is not sold. If this program is part of a software collection sold by a PD library (for instance), only a reasonable charge for the disc and copying may be charged. PD discs must cost less than 2.50 for HD discs (1.50 for DD discs), CDs must cost less than 16. If you would like to distribute this program please contact me (include a SAE if by post). Otherwise this program should only be passed between private individuls, not by libraries unless my permision has been gained.
