StarInfo/Fletcher/!Setup/Files/Disc1/Program/Games/!NetC4/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

                                NetConnect4
                                -----------
Version 1.02 (17 Jun 1997)

Introduction
------------
After I sent in NetOXO to AU, Dave Lawrence mailed me to say it was 'almost
good' and how about I write Battleships. This is my effort. Some may argue
that it's not any form of battleships they know. Others may say that perhaps
I should take up gardening. Still more may think that Elvis is alive. All
these people may be right, but one thing is definate - this is NOT
battleships.

Usage
-----
Once you run the application you'll see that it will pop up on the icon bar.
Clicking Select over it will give you a little 'connect' window to connect
you to another host. Once you've done this you'll get a ... oh, I really
can't be bothered - it's 6am and I'm tired. It's connect 4. You've played it
before. If you can't work it out you might as well take up something easy
like something-that's-very-easy. There's always interactive help if you get
stuck.

NetGame
-------
This is also the 'demonstration' application for the NetGame library I've
written, also at Mr Lawrence's suggestion. As such, there is quite a bit of
commenting in it which you may (or may not) like to read if you want to
understand how to use the NetGame library. You'll probably want to look at
the StrongHelp manuals provided as well. I've used my somewhat contentious
JFShared library as the base for this, so it's got a lot of my 'style' of
coding - I hope people a) find it useful and b) write lots of games for
people to play !

Updates
-------
This program may (or may not) be updated periodically. By clicking on the
infobox window entries for Author and Version you can move directly to the
web pages for the Justin Fletcher and this application respectively.

Help and message files
----------------------
This application is fully !Help compliant and it is recommended that when
getting to grips with it the help should be used if only to give it some
purpose! It also supports the use of MessageTrans and therefore translation
to another language or changing the messages for the fun of it is much easier
than it might have been.

NetGame Library
---------------
This application requires Justin Fletcher's NetGame library to function.
This can be obtained from Justin's web page (see below) and possibly the
FreeNet site.

Compatibility
-------------
This application has been tested on the author's A5000, but due to the lack
of friends with Acorns has not been tested on other systems. Therefore, it
ought to work on any RO3.1 machine with a stack installed.

Disclaimer
----------

may cause or loss of data resulting in its use. This application is Public

other than copying costs are charged for it. The copyright remains with

History
-------
Version 1.00 : 28 Jan 1997
First version written - running on my machine, with no 'net
stuff in it at all. It doesn't even check if I've managed to
fill the board (is that possible ?)

Version 1.01 : 01 Apr 1997
               Network version written using NetGameLib.

Version 1.02 :17 Jun 1997
A number of large changes to the innards of NetGameLib have
meant that I can now have a sites file (woo), and it even
               works remotely :-)
