!Sibelius7/!Help/Staves

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

ADDING A STAVE TO A SYSTEM

Staves with no music on are omitted from
  systems by default.

You can add a particular instrument's stave to
a system by selecting it another stave of that
instrument elsewhere, pointing to the approp-
riate system and clicking Adjust. It doesn't
matter precisely where you click - Sibelius
knows the correct instrument order and so will
ensure the stave goes in the right place.

Alternatively, you can choose from the list of
existing instruments at the top of the Instru-
ments menu and copy in the same way. This is
  not recommended for multi-stave instruments,
as for them you often require a particular
stave to be put down (see below).

MULTI-STAVE INSTRUMENTS

You can add several staves to the same instru-
ment by copying further staves of the instru-
ment onto a system which already has one.

Any instrument can have up to 128 staves.

  COPYING THE CORRECT STAVE
Each stave of a multi-stave instrument behaves
like a little instrument in its own right: it
runs right through the score, even though it
may only appear on some systems, and has its
own clef and its own music. Music written on a
particular stave can never hop onto other
staves of the instrument of its own accord.

This means that when you want to put a stave
of a multi-stave instrument onto a system, you
have to be careful to copy from the stave you
want the music to continue onto.

This is particularly obvious in piano music,
where to put the right hand's stave onto a
system you must copy from one of the right
hand's existing staves. Choosing a stave from
the Instruments menu will not necessarily give
  you the stave you want.

Copying from the correct stave also matters
when different players of an instrument are on
different staves, e.g. Flute 1 and Flute 2
have a stave each. If you want to continue a
Flute 1 phrase on a new system you must copy
Flute 1's stave from the previous system, or
the phrase may not join up if the score is
  reformatted.

DRAGGING STAVES

You can drag staves up and down to adjust the
space above them. If necessary, Sibelius will
squash the other staves together slightly to
allow room as you do this.

DELETING STAVES

If a stave only contains bar rests, you can
select it and then Delete it. This only makes
the stave disappear from this particular syst-
em, though it is still present internally and
it may still be visible on other systems.

Sibelius wont stop you deleting a stave with
just text on; however, the text won't disap-
pear permanently - you can retrieve it by
  putting the stave back again.

You can't, of course, delete the only stave in
a system, since there has to be at least one
stave to show how many bars there are. If you
want actually to cut all the bars which are on
the stave, you should select it as a system
passage and press Delete; see Passage opera-
  tions.
