Introduction
������������
This program is designed to be used within the classroom with a minimum of
support from the teacher. The program itself allows an indepth investigation into pentominoes and hexominoes. It allows the user to design the 12
pentominoes and 35 hexominoes; with the computer doing all the checking.
There are 'jig-saw' puzzles involving fitting together the 12 pentominoes.
These take form of the more common rectangle to more interesting shapes
including various animals. Finally, there is the ability to explore
tessellations with the 12 pentominoes.
The following text file is a full manual for the program.

General Information
�������������������
The program does not run in the desktop environment, but is fully RISC-OS
compatible. It has been tested on various formats including RISC-OS2,
RISC-OS3 and RISC-OS3.1 and will run on any 1Mb+ machine.
Installing the program: The program can simply be installed on to
harddisk by dragging the !Poly icon to the
destination directory in the normal way. If in
doubt refer to your User Guide.
Running the program: To run the program simply double-click on the
!Poly icon. A start-up screen will be displayed
for a short while, followed by the main menu.
The entire program is mouse/menu driven. Each mouse button has exactly the
same effect to ease operation.

The Main Menu
�������������
There are 10 options on the main menu.
Teacher Control
���������������
This allows the program to be configured for different age groups and
different purposes. This is normally accessed by a password, but this
is initially turned off.
To configure each menu item either ON or OFF simply click in the appropriate box.
'� �' The left and right arrow keys on the keyboard allow you to move through the various menu screens.
'X' Press this to exit and return to the main menu. This stores the
settings for the current session, but does not save them.
'S' This saves the current settings to disk. In future, when you
load the program, these settings will be used on start-up.
Access Code
�����������
Setting 'Access Code' to OFF means that there will be no security access to the Teacher Control option. This is the default setting. The initial password is 'poly'. To change the password, press:-
Ctrl+'P' (^P) - This allows you to type in an alphanumeric password of up to 8 characters. Press [RETURN] once you have typed the password. You will be asked to confirm it before it is saved. Note: The password is case-
sensitive: ie. poly and Poly are different.
Flip
����
Turning off FLIP prevents the user from rotating the Pentominoes when trying to complete either the PENTANIMALS or PENTOSHAPE puzzles.
Colour
������
If this is left ON, the pentominoes' colour can be changed using the mini colour palette. Otherwise the default colours are used.
Help
����
If help is left on, pressing ctrl+'H' (^H), when using PENTANIMALS or PENTOSHAPES, removes all the incorrectly placed pentominoes.

Tutorial
��������
This is a very simple 3-page tutorial explaining what a polyomino is and how to 'put them' together.

Pentomino/Hexomino Designer
���������������������������
These both work in exactly the same fashion. Pentominoes involve joining
together 5 squares, whilst hexominoes involves 6 squares. The designer is
very easy to use.
On the right hand grid, the user clicks the 5 or 6 squares that are to form
the next pentomino/hexomino. Clicking on the squares of the grid turn them onand off depending on their current state.
Once the user is satisfied with their design they click on 'TRY'. If the
design is valid the computer will display it on the left. Otherwise, an
appropriate error message will be displayed and the user is able to try
again.
It is possible to exit at any time by clicking on 'QUIT' and confirming your action.

Rectangles/PentAnimals/PentoShapes
����������������������������������
These 3 menu options all lead to sub-menus which have various different
'jig-saws' to complete. They all work in very similar ways; all using the
same 'Control Panel'.
All the puzzles can be completed with the shown pentominoes, if they stay in that orientation. Other solutions may be possible, but the program is not
'aware' of these. You may attempt to find other solutions by flipping
(& rotating) each pentomino. Good Luck!
The various different sizes of rectangles have several solutions. The 6x10
has over 2000! For this reason, there is no help facility with these shapes.
Selecting a Pentomino Piece
���������������������������
In order to select which pentomino you wish to place on the shape, simply click on '�PICK' and then click on a pentomino. Once selected
it appears in the middle of the shape, with a black border.
Changing Colour
���������������
The selected pentomino can have its colour changed by clicking on one
of the colours on the mini colour palette.
Moving the Pentomino
��������������������
The selected pentomino can be moved into position using the arrow keys on the 'Control Panel'. Clicking '�' moves the pentomino to the right, and so on.
Fixing the Pentomino in Place
�����������������������������
In order to fix the pentomino in place, click on 'FIX'. Note, the pentomino cannot overlap another and must lie on the shape, otherwise
an error message is generated.
Removing a Pentomino
��������������������
Clicking on 'REMOVE' will remove the currently selected pentomino. If
no pentomino is selected, the mouse pointer will jump on to the shape
and any fixed pentomino can then be removed by simply clicking on it.
Clicking anywhere else will generate an error message and bring the
mouse pointer back to the 'Control Panel'. When a pentomino is removed it is replaced to the left of the screen in its original orientation.
Rotating and Flipping a Pentomino

The orientation of the selected pentomino can be changed by clicking on 'FLIP'. This actually cycles through all the possible orientations
of the pentomino, including both flips and rotations. When flip is selected the 'new' pentomino is returned to the middle of the shape.
HIDDEN FUNCTIONS
����������������
Help (^H)
���������
In order for this to work ^H (Ctrl+'H') must be pressed. This removes all incorrecetly placed pentominoes from the shape. This is not available with 'RECTANGLES'.
Saving a Picture (^S)
���������������������
This saves the current picture. On pressing ^S, confirmation is required as to whether you wish to save the picture. You are then requested to enter a filename, which can be up to 10 characters long. The picture will be stored in the same directory as the !Poly application on a Harddisk or on the floppy disk from which !Poly was loaded. The picture is saved as a Sprite which can be loaded into other applications in the normal way.

Tessellations
�������������
On choosing tessellations a blank grid is presented with the 12 pentominoes
to the left. Use '�PICK' to pick one of the pentominoes in the normal
fashion. This will then appear in the middle of the grid and can be moved,
fixed and flipped as before. As soon as a shape is FIXed another appears
automatically. The colours of each pentomino can be changed as before to
create various tiling patterns.
Saving a Pattern (^S)

This works exactly the same as above.

Quit

On confirmation this will quit the main program and return you to the
desktop.

Known Bugs
����������
The only known bugs are connected with the saving of either pictures or the
set-up/configuration options. If the same floppy disk is used in several
computers then 'Ambiguous Name' errors can occur. A simple solution is to
use the program from harddisk or have a separate floppy disk for each
machine.
N.B. These errors are hard to trap and consequently you might be unable to
continue from such an error. If this occurs reset the computer.

Future Versions
���������������
I'm open to suggestions. Some ideas are below:-
1) General speed increase. Using more integer variables and re-writing some
procedures. Not that the program is particularly slow at any point!
2) Ability to save midway through designing polyominoes or doing puzzles
3) Printing from within the program. (I think this is not advisable!)
4) Automatic tessellation of pentominoes
5) Movement of Pentominoes by use of cursor keys on the keyboard as well
as the mouse.
