This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Instructions for Use
====================
Loading
-------
To load MZX, double click on the !MZX icon. This will install the MZX icon
onto the icon bar. Alternatively, click on a file of type SNA (&CEF) or
Z80 (&CEE). This will also install the icon bar icon, but will pre-load
the snapshot file.
Starting
--------
To start up the emulation, click on the MZX icon bar icon. Clicking with
Select will open a multitasking MZX window; clicking with Adjust will
switch to single task mode. Note that single tasking may not be possible
at present with some monitor types; normal (TV 50Hz) monitors and
multiscan monitors should be able to cope. In addition, attempting to
select single tasking mode will crash a Risc PC 600.
Changing between modes
----------------------
In multitasking mode, clicking Adjust on the icon bar icon will switch to
single task mode. (Clicking with Select will always open the MZX emulation
window.) In single tasking mode, you can return to the desktop by pressing
Alt-F1. In multitasking mode, clicking Select in the emulation window will
gain the Input focus, allowing keys to be interpreted as Spectrum
keypresses.
Loading a snapshot
------------------
At any time after starting the emulator, you may load a snapshot file of
type SNA or Z80 by either dragging its icon to the icon bar icon, or by
dragging it into the !MZX emulation window.
Options
-------
The Options dialogue box is obtained from the MZX menu. The options are:
Sound: Switch sound on/off. (Note that sound does not work on newer
machines thanks to Acorn's cost-cutting, and it also incurs
a slight speed penalty.) Sound is only available in single
task mode.
Speed Control: Enable/disable speed limiting. This is useful on ARM3
machines where the emulation runs too fast. Note that it
is only active in single tasking mode, and can disrupt
the sound output.
Freeze: This option pauses the emulator. It is automatically
switched on when you close the MZX emulation window.
Acorn Joystick: This switches between keyboard joystick emulation (keypad
keys 1-4 and Enter behave as a Kempston joystick) to real
joystick emulation (Acorn-compatible joystick behaves as
a Kempston joystick).
Loading: This is the amount by which the speed control option slows
down the emulation in single-tasking mode, and is selectable
from 1-255.
Refresh: This is the number of frames between window redraw in
multitasking mode. The higher the value, the faster the
emulation will run, but high values also make the display
appear jerky and unresponsive.
Diagnostics: Enable/disable diagnostic printing. This may provide
explanations as to why a snapshot file fails to work. It
should be left off in normal use.
Note that these options have associated key-combinations:
Freeze: Alt-F9
Unfreeze: F10
Sound on: Alt-F5
Sound off: Alt-F6
Increase loading: Alt-F4
Decrease loading: Alt-F3
Volume up: Alt-F8
Volume down: Alt-F7
Saving snapshots
----------------
Pressing Alt-F2 will save a snapshot to the file <snapshot$file>. Use
*set snapshot$file <filename>
to specify where you want the file saved; the default is a file 'SnapShot'
in the same directory as MZX. (Drag save will be implemented in the next
release.)
Quitting
--------
Select Quit from the MZX menu, or press Alt-Q.
Reset
-----
Pressing Alt-R has the same effect as the Spectrum 48+ reset button.
