This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- February 1992 ------------- This is the February '92 issue of Archimedes World. A lot of care has been taken in selecting software which will be both entertaining and of practical use. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1992. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWFeb92' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWFeb92' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying Software When the '!AWFeb92' application icon is dragged from the archive window to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to be set to at least 1700k. If you have 2 Megabytes or more of RAM then you can create an 800K RAM disk and copy the 'February92' archive to there. This greatly speeds up the loading of software from the archive. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by choosing the 'Open viewer' item from the Waiter disk menu. Once the application's directory viewer has opened up you can then drag the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied. They can then be loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS. If you have any difficulties running software from the archive then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try running them from there. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu while others run applications or display text. To select a menu item click the select button once over its icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu. The Demos The Micro Drive demo is yet another Archimedes World exclusive. Published by Cambridge International Software, Micro Drive is considered to be one of the best Golf Simulations available for the Archimedes. The realistic graphics and control method combine to form an enjoyable game. Try the demo for yourself to see just how good it really is. You get to play two holes in each of three courses. Notate is the new music creation package from LongMan Logotron. We present a fully usuable demo. All the features of the application work except the Save and Print options. A brief summary of the instructions is provided to allow you to try out the application's features. A set of example songs and sounds are also provided for you to experiment with. Animal Animator is a suite of advanced programs which enables you to create animations of moving animals quickly and easily. The animation sequences produced by the suite are so realistic that they have to be seen to be believed. We have included an example raytraced picture on this disk to whet your apetite. If you would like to produce similar pictures and animations for fun or more serious applications such as science projects then turn to the Software Sale pages in the magazine and order a copy today. The Programs Up until now printing BASIC programs has involved a time consuming process outside of the desktop. With !BasPrint you can print a BASIC program directly from the desktop with no fuss at all. The format of the program listing can be controlled from the application menu. If you want to know what date it is next Thursday or what day the 29th of the month is then !Calender is for you. This desktop application displays a calender in a window. Using the mouse you can step forwards and backwards a month at a time or choose a month or year from the application menu. Explode is one of those puzzle games which is very easy to play but extremely difficult to master. Place your bombs in the grid and build up their explosive potential. Complex chain reactions occur as one explosion triggers others around it. You need the brain of Einstein to work out what the results of making moves will be. You can select to play against the computer or a human opponent. Bored with the usual blue arrow pointer? Want something a little more lively to point with? If you do then try our Pointer Change application. This novel utility will replace the usual blue arrow with an animated pointer. Once you have become bored with the eight example animations provided you can easily create your own. Regular Features The very latest Shared C Library from Acorn is available in the Resources directory. Updating your old !System application with this new module is made very simple by the use of !SysMerge. Full instructions on how to use this application are provided in the application's Help file. The !Banker application which was published in the December 1991 issue of Archimedes World requires the ABCLib module to be loaded before it will run. We realise that many of you do not have this module in your !System application so we have included it in the Resources directory. Copy the ABCLib module into your master !System application. You will now be able to run the !Banker application without any problems. Viruses We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World so our cover disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are 100% virus free. Earn �800 We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens, animations, clip art sprite/Draw files, music, sound samples, games, demos and anything else that is interesting and original. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Look inside the magazine for full instructions on how to submit programs to Archimedes World for publication. Ideas If you have great ideas for useful or entertaining programs but lack the programming know how then Archimedes World may be able to help. We can turn your ideas into working programs. Just send in your program description to us and we will evaluate it. It does not have to be very detailed, just clear enough to give us an accurate idea of what the progam will be able to do and what benefits it will bring. If you are on to a winner we will commission one of the many talented programmers we have on our files to write the application. Archimedes World will then publish the program for the benefit of all our readers and give both you and the programmer a handsome reward. Public Domain If you are the author of a public domain program you will be interested to know that we are able to distribute your programs.
