This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

If you own an RS-232 printer, and RS-232 interface card, you can ignore the rest of this section. GEOS expects the printer to be Device #4 on the Commodore Serial Bus, so the printer or interface card must be set to Device #4. If you have a printer that connects directly to the �"u @P h � � � � @@ Commodore Serial Bus, you can ignore @P h � � � � @@ Commodore Serial Bus, you can ignore the rest of this section. The print drivers set interface cards to transparent mode via software control, so the interface card should be set to emmulate what ever printer you have. 3 PRINTER RESOLUTIONS GEOS expexts to print at a resolution of 80 dots per inch (dpi) horizontally, and 72 dpi vertically. GEOS keeps a page as a bitmap 640 dots (80 commodore screen cards) wide, and 752 dots (94 screen cards) long. This fills an expexted live print area of 8" x 10.44" per page. Unfortionately not all printers are capable of printing at 80dpi horizontal resolution. Many printers only support 60dpi, some also support 120dpi, and some even support 240dpi. 240dpi is no problem because 240/3=80, and although it is a slow way of printing 80dpi, zeros can be sent for 2/3 of the columns to do it. 60 and 120dpi printers are another problem. It is the policy of Berkeley Softworks to not compact the output data to squeeze 80 dots into 60 dots, thereby altering the appearance of the document unpredictably. Instead, we let a 60dpi printer print out at 60dpi, stretching the docunent out horizontally by a uniform 25%. For printers that support 120dpi, data is double sent, to produce more solid looking output. What this means to an owner of a 60dpi printer, is that a geoPaint document will run off the right edge of the page, and a geoWrite document will lose its automatic margins and the ruler will be inaccurate. The owner of a 60dpi printer is cautioned to not draw in the right 25% of a geoPaint document, and to set the margins in on each side of a geoWrite document. There are also some reducing drivers available, that use high resolutions to shrink the documents down. The Star NB-15 at 90x90dpi, Epson RED at 120x108, and LaserJet (which offers 75x75, 100x100, 150x150, and 300x300dpi) drivers are some of these. 4 NOTE FOR MPS801 AND 1525 USERS The early Commodore printers (MPS801 and 1525) had non-standard pin spacing in their printheads. The spacing wound up being about 1/69" instead of the normal 1/72" for a 9-pin head. This means that a GEOS document will be too long for an MPS801 page, in addition to being too wide (as noted in printer resolutions above). geoWrite documents generated by geoWrite V2.0, and later are OK. 5 NOTE ABOUT EPSON COMPATIBILITY There are a number of 9-pin printers out there that call themselves "Epson compatible". This can mean a number of different things, since there are some different models of 9-pin Epson printers available with different capabilities. Usually "Epson compatible" means FX-80 compatible, but if you are not sure, the best thing to do is try the different print drivers listed below. The drivers are listed in order of quality printout, any NLQ features, and speed. Number 1 is the best, and number 7 is the worst and last resort. 1) NX-1000 Rainbow, Star NX-10 DS, Star NX-10 QS Fast 15 color 80x72dpi graphic printing, and NLQ fonts supported. Star NX-1000 Rainbow 2) Epson JX-80, Epson FX-80 DS, FX-80 QS Fast 15 color 80x72dpi graphic printing, but instead of using an NLQ font, these drivers print "NLQ" in "emphasized & enhanced" mode. Epson JX-80 3) Star NX-10, Star NX-10 DS, Star NX-10 QS Fast 80x72dpi graphic printing, and NLQ fonts supported. Epson FX-85, FX-185, FX-286, EX-800 Panasonic KX-P1091 Star NX-10, NX-1000 �| @P h � � � � @@ 4) Epson FX-80, Epson FX-80 DS, FX-80 QS Fast 80x72dpi graphic printing, but instead of us @P h � � � � @@ 4) Epson FX-80, Epson FX-80 DS, FX-80 QS Fast 80x72dpi graphic printing, but instead of using an NLQ font, these drivers print "NLQ" in "emphasized & enhanced" mode. Epson FX-80 5) Epson LX-80, Star NX-10 DS, Star NX-10 QS Slow 80x72dpi graphic printing, and NLQ fonts supported. Epson LX-80, LX-86, LX-800 6) Epson FX-80 DS, Epson FX-80 QS Slow 80x72dpi graphic printing, but instead of using an NLQ font, these drivers print "NLQ" in "emphasized & enhanced" mode. Epson FX-80 7) Epson MX-80 Last resort Epson driver. Low resolution 60x72dpi graphic printing, and instead of using an NLQ font, this driver prints "NLQ" in "emphasized & enhanced" mode. Epson MX-80 6 SPECIAL NOTE FOR FOREIGN USERS If you are using a PAL Commodore system and an RS-232 interface, be sure to use only the drivers with a "PAL" prefix. 7 MULTI STRIKE NOTE The multi strike drivers (noted by a DS for double strike or QS for quad strike after the printer name) send large amounts of data to the printer, and are therefore very slow. It is recommended that draft printouts be done with a single strike driver, and only the final be done iwith a multi strike driver. This will save time and ribbon life. 8 2.X VERSION PRINT DRIVER FEATURES After version 2.0, the print drivers have the capability to print in 3 modes. These are: 1) normal graphics mode, 2) ASCII character mode, 3) NLQ character mode. Different programs may or may not use all these features, but it is advised that you keep the latest version print driver for your printer on the disk with your application. 9 TROUBLESHOOTING 9.1 NOTHING PRINTS Caused by either 1) having the wrong print driver selected for your printer, 2) printer not "on line", 3) printer power off, or 4) printer out of paper. Check all these situations. 9.2 "PRINTER INACCESSABLE" Caused by either 1) printer not "on line", 2) printer power off, or 3) printer out of paper. Check all these situations. 9.3 ERROR: Print Driver not on Disk Caused by not having the selected print driver on the same disk as the APPLICATION (geoPaint, geoWrite, etc.) you are running. All work disks that you make that have an application on them should also have the printer driver on them. 9.4 GARBAGE PRINTS OUT Caused by not selecting the proper print driver for your printer, or turning it off during a printout. Once printing has started leave power on to printer until page is done. 9.5 LARGE BLANK GAPS RUNNING HORIZONTALLY Large gaps (1/3" or more from top of printing, to top of next line of printing) are caused by interface card, printer, or both automatically adding a linefeed to any carriage return encountered. Set both the printer and interface card to non-auto-linefeed mode. �Ql @ @P h � � � � @@ 9.6 SMALL BLANK GAPS RUNNING HORIZONTALLY Small gaps (1/6" or less from top of printing, to top of next line of printing) are caused by not having the proper driver selected. For example, running an IBM 5152+ with an Epson driver would yeild these small gaps. 9.7 TINY BLANK GAPS RUNNING HORIZONTALLY Tiny gaps (1/72" or less from bottom of printing, to top of next line of printing) are caused by innaccuracies in the printer carriage control. Make sure that the paper pulls freely from the input stack, and is not binding on anything entering the printer.
