06-05-89/Smanual
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

User Guide to the BBC Telesoftware / Met Office Satellite Data Service ====================================================================== Introduction ============ The satellite image data service is a joint venture between the BBC and the Meteorological Office. The aim is to provide telesoftware users with the latest weather satellite data from the MeteoSat satellite. The Meteorological Office receive such files regularly as part of their weather forecasting material. These files are sent to the BBC's weather department computers for use in the BBC weather programmes. BBC Telesoftware intercept some of these files, take copies of the data received from the Met Office, process them, then make them available a few hours later as Telesoftware files. Data Format =========== The format of the data broadcast is based on the format used by the Met Office, but is not identical. (This, of course, is not the format of the data as transmitted by the satellite, as the Meteorological Office carry out a great deal of enhancement and compression processing to the original data before passing it on.) If you wish to use the data from these files in any way other than to create computer screen displays, you will need a copy of the data format protocol which is available separately. Receiving The Satellite Data (Downloading) ========================================== For the BBC micro, the program "SatLoad" gives access to the currently available files within the satellite data service. For IBM machines, a similar utility, SATLOAD.EXE, is provided with the BBC approved teletext card - if you do not have this, please contact your adaptor card supplier. To use, type CHAIN "SatLoad" (BBC Micro) or just SATLOAD (IBM pc). The software will search for the catalogue file. To do this, it looks at the TSDP (Television Service Data Packet) for the main index page number, then follows link 5 of the main index page to find the main telesoftware catalogue, where link 5 again will lead to the Satellite Service catalogue. Under normal circumstances, the computer will find the Satellite Service catalogue within about 15 seconds. Once found, details of each file available in the service will be displayed. During the time the system is searching for the correct catalogue, the prompt "L = Latest image" is displayed. If, during this time, the "L" key is pressed, the program will search for and download the latest available satellite image data, only displaying the catalogue details when this file has been saved to disc. There is no response by the computer when "L" is pressed, but it will have been noted! If you prefer to select the files manually, do not press "L" - just let the program receive and display the catalogue entries in the normal way. In either case, the catalogue will be found and displayed for a (further) selection. Files are presented in a similar format to the normal telesoftware catalogue, and the cursor up and down keys should be used to select the required file. If more files are available than will fit on the screen, a message indicating the total number of available files is displayed, and pressing the down arrow will reveal the remainder. To download a file, move the bar to the required file, then press RETURN or ENTER. Downloading is fully automatic, following which the catalogue will be displayed again for further selections. If no further files are required, press ESCAPE. Confirmation of this is then required by pressing ESCAPE a second time. The downloaded data files will remain on your currently selected disc. Remember, however, these files are not "screen dumps" but are data files based on the data received from the satellite. Converting The Data Into a Computer Screen ========================================== Possibly the most useful way of using the satellite data is to create a computer screen image from it. Our service includes software to do this on three types of micro - the BBC Microcomputer (with or without the 6502 second processor); The Acorn Archimedes; and any IBM compatible pc. "Display" is the BBC Micro (models B, B+, and Master) version, to create mode 2 screen images. The routine takes some time to complete, but will generate a colour display showing cloud position and thickness, with each colour representing a different cloud thickness. This is best viewed on a monochrome monitor, where each colour is represented as a grey level. Note, however, that the BBC Micro, and some IBM display cards, are incapable of producing the fine resolution available from the data files, so accurate studies of cloud thickness are best made using the original data file rather than the screen image. "ArcDisp" is a similar routine for the Acorn Archimedes computer. The cloud thickness is more accurately portrayed as one of 16 grey levels, and a higher resolution is possible than on the BBC Micro. "SATDISP.EXE" (available shortly) will create a screen display on an IBM pc or 100% compatible, automatically giving the maximum possible resolution and picture size with the display device present. A VGA board will give the best results, but most other display devices are catered for, including EGA, CGA, Amstrad, Hercules and some others. As with the BBC Micro, colours are used to represent the different levels of cloud thickness, so a monochrome display will show these more effectively. However, most monochrome monitors are only for use with monochrome display adaptors which are incapable of the high-resolution graphics needed! When complete, the display will be saved to disc as a screen dump, ready for re-loading when required without having to use the display program again. Each screen is saved under a unique filename comprising the 7 digits of the Julian Date integer (the least significant 4 digits for BBC DFS systems, and the least significant 5 digits for IBM/MSDOS systems), plus the first 2 digits of the Julian Date fraction. This is then prefixed with a single alphabetic character relating to the area covered by the image. Note the filename is derived from the full Julian Date, and not the Modified Julian Date more commonly associated with computing applications. In this way, each screen can be easily identified and sorted into order within other utility software. It may be worthy of note that the full Julian date (integer part) increments at 12:00 midday, whereas the Modified JD increments at 00:00 (midnight). IBM and MSDOS files will also be given the filename extension of .SCR to signify a screen image. For example, the Julian Date for Midday, Wednesday 15 February 1989 is 2447573.0000. Files created for this day would be: Midday Atlantic: 18:00 European: IBM: A4757300.SCR E4757325.SCR BBC: a244757300 e244757325 BBC (DFS): a757300 e757325 Utilities ========= There are many uses for both the satellite data and for the screen displays. Some of these have been catered for in utility files, and we hope users of the service will define other areas and be able to offer other utilities for distribution via Telesoftware. a. SatSeq (BBC micro) --------------------- "SatSeq" is a BASIC program for the BBC Master computer, and allows a quantity of screen displays from a disc or discs to be displayed in date sequence. To use the program, LOAD "SatSeq", then insert the disc or discs holding the screen images. RUN the program, entering the appropriate disc drive information as requested. If no drive is specified, drive 0 will be assumed by default. The program will find all the satellite screen images on the discs, sort them into order, then cycle through each one in turn. Press f0 to toggle on or off an automatic cycling routine - displaying each successive screen in turn starting from the currently displayed image. The time interval between displaying each screen is set to 0 by default, but can be altered by changing the parameter near the start of the program. Alternatively, using the cursor keys (when not in automatic display mode) will step through the images individually: Up Arrow = Go to start of sequence Down arrow = Go to end of sequence Left arrow = Back one image Right arrow = Forward one image <RETURN> = Quit These functions may be re-allocated to other keys if preferred, by altering the variables near the start of the program. It would be logical, particularly when using ADFS, to save the screen images in a specific directory, for example: $.SatScreens. The particular directory searched by the program must be the same for each disc specified. It is, by default, the root directory, but may be changed by altering the string allocated to the variable 'directory$' near the start of the program listing. "SatSeq" can be modified for use on a BBC Model B or B+ computer (DFS only). Load the program (version 2.18), then delete lines 60, 70, 570, 580, and 910 to 1190 inclusive. This will give enough room for the procedures to operate, but with large numbers of images for display you may also need to lower the value of PAGE to &1900 before use. These modifications are required solely due to the lack of available memory on these older computers. Although "SatSeq" V2.17 has been designed for use with Econet, problems still exist with some systems. A new version will be available as soon as these difficulties can be identified and corrected. 2. SatShow (BBC micro) ---------------------- "SatShow" is another BASIC program for BBC Master machines, Archimedes, or Model B or B+ with shadow screen upgrade, and will display the file header information from any specified data file (not screen image). The format and content of the file header is detailed in a separate document. For IBM pc's, the header information to each file is detailed when "SATDISP.EXE" is run. Using The Service With Other Computers ====================================== The Satellite Data Service is fully compatible with almost any make or type of computer with a disc drive (or other storage medium that supports Random Access file handling) and a suitable graphics display mode. A teletext adaptor, capable of correctly receiving and decoding telesoftware, is required, and software to find and interpret the catalogue and to display the received data file, must be written if the computer's operating system is not compatible with BBC or IBM/MSDOS computers. Copyright ========= Copyright exists on all data, programs, text or other files broadcast by the BBC. The situation is as follows (the term "program" includes any computer readable file - text, data, software, or binary file): (1) Domestic users of a program broadcast on CEEFAX may: - make two copies only for private purposes. - adapt or modify it for private purposes but not for sale. (2) Educational and training institutions and agencies may: - record and use the program for their own educational training purposes but not for sale. - adapt, modify and distribute a program for their own educational and training purposes, but not for sale. (3) No part of a program may otherwise be reproduced, stored in a retrieval system or transmitted in any form or by any means, without the prior permission of the BBC, except in accordance with the 1956 copyright act. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (c) BBC tv 1989 Jeremy Brayshaw : 24 February 1989 --------------------------------------------------------------------------
