DESCRIPTION
-----------
!Technique provides a collection of utilities, most of which were
performed each by one whole application, which is unnecessarily heavy on
memory and processor time. !Technique is crunched, to free as much memory as
possible. Unlike 57 applications, it has only one polling loop, not 57. It
stores 90% of its sprites and icons internally, so when you quit it (shurely
not?) it relinquishes all the memory it grabbed, and it provides a
replacement for at least 20 small application utilities. Like these:

USING TECHNIQUE
---------------
Technique installs on the iconbar in the usual RISC-OS manner, with
a double click and a whirr of the drive. Clicking on the iconbar icon opens
the main Technique window from which all other windows are accessed, after a
hierarchical fashion, by clicking on an icon on this window. I shall
describe the mode of operation of each of the icons in this window in turn,
starting with:
1. FileType Setter
The group of sixteen icons to the left of the window
represent the filetypes built into the machine. Dragging one or more files
here will set their type to that shown on the icon. The four icons to the
right of here are configurable, and can be filled with your own choice of
filetypes not provided in the main 16. The numbers on the far right are the
numbers associated with each filetype. If the "Set" button below is
selected, then files dragged onto these four icons will have their filetype
set, as before, to that shown in the icon. If, however, "Store" is selected,
then a file dragged onto one of the four icons will have its filetype stored
in that icon. Clicking on "Set" now enables the type you have just stored to
be used for setting the type of further files as described before. The
contents of these stores is preserved if you use the "Save Status" menu
option. If you use this option, and upon starting Technique find that
instead of the icon you stored there, there is a white square then RISC-OS
has not 'seen' the application to which the stored filetype and icon belong.
The number of the type is still stored, however, and can still be used to
set the type of other files.
2. The Real Time Clock
This small window provides a desktop display of the
computer's internal clock. The clock will consequently show the correct time
even if the computer has been off. Dragging a file or files here will set
their time/date stamp to the current time, today. The date shown is the
current date, unless Technique was running at midnight, in which case it is
yesterday's date, due to a small internal bug which I can simply not be
bothered to fix. If the time shown is not the correct time, use !Alarm
(supplied with your machine) or similar to set the time.
3. The Files Window
This provides a miscellany of minor file operations which
can be carried out from the CLI but not from the desktop. Dragging a file to
the first icon will *TYPE it if it is a text, command, or obey file.
Dragging a file to the next icon will *DUMP it. After either of these
operations, press RETURN to re-enter the desktop. Dragging a file or
directory or application to the next icon will enable you to move it. This
is to be used in preference to SHIFT-dragging icons between filer windows
since it will rewrite the address of the file on the media in question, and
thus does not actually move any data. This means chances of corruption are
reduced, the operation is MUCH quicker, and you can, for example, move a
300k file about on a disc which is more or less full.
Moving along to the next row, dragging a BASIC program to the the
BASIC icon will load it into BASIC for you. Clicking on the icon will just
enter BASIC, without loading anything. Dragging a directory or application
to the next icon will open it for you. This is for those who, like me, are
too damn lazy to reach the keyboard. Dragging files to the next icon will
change their access attributes - click to alter the state: just a key will
unlock them, the crossed-out key will protect them against deletion.
The more observant user will have noticed that this window has a
size toggle icon, despite not having any scroll bars. Clicking on it expands
the window to reveal the trashcan icon. Dragging ANY type of file,
directory, application, here WILL DESTROY IT. Always, regardless of whether
it is locked or not, and it will recurse and delete all subdirectories until
is has had its fill, without any request for confirmation. This can be very
useful if used with caution, but just DON'T drag the root directory of your
winchester there, ok? It must be said that, after all that, write-protected
discs are, of course, unaffected.
4. The Sound Window
This window os fairly self-explanatory. The entire audio
system cam be switched on or off, as can the internal speakers. Use the
arrows to select the number of a sound channel, and then use the icons
below to move its position on the stereo soundscape. This works with, say,
Rhapsody, Maestro, and some SoudTracker programs, and the settings of these
and everything in the window are preserved with "Save Status".
5. The Character Set Window
If you are a regular Archimedes user, you will
have more than probably seen a little utility called !Chars, or a similar
one which is also supplied with the like of First Word Plus. Basically,
clicking on a character enters it as if it had been pressed on the keyboard.
For entering characters into menus, which close when you click SELECT, move
the pointer over the desired character and press SHIFT. This may seem
somewhat redundant, as most Arcs are supplied with a perfectly adequate
keyboard, but the window allows those characters which are not on the
keyboard, such as '�', which I have just entered using the above method,
incidentally, to be entered, and the whole character set can be viewed at
onece, which is just tops if you have changed the system font for any
reason.
6. The Function Key Strip
Clicking on the red function key icon toggles a bar
of function keys above the iconbar. Clicking on these replicates pressing
the actual function keys. This can lead to shortcuts for menus with, say,
Impression, or even just pressing f12.
7. The Calculator
This is an exceedingly poor calculator, in much the same
vein as the oft-slated Acorn one provided with each and every Arc. It even
suffers from the same fundamental lack of operator precedence (for the
non-mathematicians, that means if you enter 2+3*4=, the calculator says 20
instead of the more correct 14.) It is much simpler to program without this
feature corrected, and the calculator suffices for adding up the length of
some files or finding the area of you mouse mat. If you need anything more,
you should be looking to get hold of a decent desktop calculator like the
very excellent !SciCalc, or even just using a normal Casio one, which is
much simpler and uses no memory.
8. The Desktop Control Window
Mainly this window provides control over the
screen blanker. The blanker operates if the computer has received no input
for a predetermined amount of time via the mouse or keyboard, in order to
prevent 'burn-in' on your monitor. It can be toggled on/off so that it comes
on after the delay, which is altered just below by the arrows. It can also
be turned on (or not) by moving the mouse to the origin (= bottom left hand
corner) if you can't wait that long. The four effects determine what the
computer does while the screen is blanked. Currently, they are: 1. Parallax
Starfield 2. Sort-of-rectangles animated thing 3. The time, printed
randomly about the screen so as not to defeat the object of blanking the
screen in the first place, and 4. Nothing. The meaner of users might like
to select effect 4, and a delay of 5s in order to save electricity. Others
might not. Settings are preserved when using "Save Status". To recreate the
desktop after blanking, move the mouse or press a key. You may have to wait
about 3 seconds to do this after the initial blank since the computer may be
too busy doing something else to look at the mouse, let alone the keyboard.
The REDRAW icon redraws the entire screen, including (hopefully) all
non-standard modes. This can be useful if you have loaded a screen over the
desktop, or have changed the font settings using, for example, !FontCtrl. If
you lose the icon under a screen, you will notice that it inverts itself
when you move the pointer over it, so you can find it again.
The icons to the right give information on the desktop mode
currently in use - the width and height (in pixels), the number, and the
number of colours.
9. The Config Icon
Drag a config file, saved via the menu (see below) here to
load the configuration back into the CMOS RAM. There are two example files
provided inside !Techniques directory. "Maximise" is the setting I use
myself, which maximises memory use on a 1Mb machine, leaving over 800k free
on power-up. "Default" is the 'factory' setting, the same as achieved by
holding down R on power-up.
10. The Miscellaneous Window
Clicking on the first three icons opens device
windows for the serial:, printer:, and null: devices. These can be used
instead of loading a printer driver if you are tight on memory - drag a text
file into the printer: window will print it. "Moving" (SHIFT-dragging) a
file into the null: window is another way of deleting it, and also has other
uses for the more experienced user. The 8MHz ROMS icon toggles the speed of
the computer's ROMs. Running them at 8MHz on all ARM2 machines speeds up the
computer by about 10%. I have heard that you should not use this feature if
you have a hard drive - presumably as it can occasionally cause the machine
to crash.
The three writable icons below are for entering command lines, as at
the * prompt. They are best used for setting system variables and the like,
as all output is directed to the null: device. Thus they are not to be used
for entering BASIC or similar. To actuate each command, click on the
numbered icon next to it. The commands are stored when using "Save Status".
The mouse speed icons are fairly self-explanatory. The SHUTDOWN icon logs
off all fileservers, dismounts all filing systems, closes all files, and
parks all heads, prior to quitting the desktop or turning the machine off.
It will allow you to do a reset in software - confirmation is requested
first. The 'FileCore Fix' icon provides a means of defeating the dreaded
'FileCore in use' error which the Filer throws at you if you forget to
dismount your discs. Clicking on it should sort out the problem and allow
you to save your work, but I would recommend resetting the computer as soon
as it is convenient to do so regardless - regard the fix as temporary. In
addition, Technique monitors for the desktop being exited - by selecting
'Exit' from the Task Manager menu, or pressing Shift-Ctrl-f12, say - and
will allow you a chance to override that decision. I think I will also add a
facility which makes Technique monitor the length of the paragraphs that are
being typed in for !Help files, as this one is clearly too long...
THE MENU
--------
Clicking MENU in any of Technique's windows or on the iconbar icon
brings up Technique's only menu. 'Info' shows its info window, 'Quit' quits,
'Save Status' preserves your preferences of audio settings, screen blanker
settings, and stored file types, and is loaded each time Technique is
started. 'Save Config' leads to a save dialogue box which you can drag
anywhere. The contents of the computer's CMOS RAM are stored in the file,
which can be loaded back by dragging to the Config icon in the main window.
WHAT TO DO WITH TECHNIQUE
-------------------------
I load Technique before I start to use the computer
for any intensive DTP or Art session. It sits unobtrusively in the
background, an can often be used for just the clock, and the screen blanker,
which is really a must if you value your VDU. Only open the windows which
you need and when you need them, don't let you screen get clutterd. This is
the principle behind Technique's hierarchical window system. Closing any
child window with ADJUST rather than SELECT opens the main window, for ease
of access to other windows. Customize it to your own personal preferences -
play with it and familiarize yourself with it so you can use it to its and
your best advantages. Don't feel you have to use ALL of it's features: If
you own a much better screen blanker, then turn Technique's off and save
that preference for future use. If you don't use any of it then free
yourself 75k-ish of disc space - Never use a program you don't like simply
for the sake of using it.
KNOWN BUGS
----------
Sometimes, particularly if you have already loaded it before
during the same session, Technique will fail to load due to a 'No Room'
error. I haven't a clue what the source of this one is - it certainly isn't
a memory problem, and is doubtless due to some little programming twist
which I just don't understand. Simply trying again, or quitting another task
first usually sorts it out.
The only other problem with Techinque that I am aware of is the
icon for the null: device, which is v. poor and Low Quality. Sorry.
