Desktop Converter

Introduction
Desktop Converter is a useful application for converting common types of
measurement to and from metric. It has a number of invaluable features
allowing it to be used for a variety of purposes.
At its most basic, Desktop Converter can be used as an everyday application,
saving you the trouble of digging out your conversion tables and calculator
every time you need to know what 1 mile is in metres.
If you need to convert a number of measurements, tables of conversions can be
created and saved as text or CSV files which can then be loaded into most
suitable applications across many computer platforms.
Instructions
(1) Getting Started
To load Desktop Converter, double click on its icon in the usual way. The
Desktop Converter icon will then appear on the icon bar.

To open the main window simply click on the icon bar icon.
Next set up a conversion. Firstly deciding whether you want to convert From
metric or To metric, do this by clicking on the appropriate icons at the top
of the main window.
Next choose the type of measurement that you wish to convert by clicking on
the small icon to right of the 'Type of measurement - ...' icon. This will
bring up a menu, from which you can go on to make your selection. The new
type of measurement will then appear in the icon.
Enter the value to be converted into the 'Value' writable icon (click on the
icon to place the caret inside).
If you are entering a very large or very small number you can use the
exponent facility. Anyone who has used a scientific calculator or done
anything like GCSE maths should be familiar with this. If you wish to ignore
this, then as long as both Input data and Conversion show E0 then the number
shown is the actual value. If you wish to know more see later on in the
manual. If the exponent is zero (i.e. E0) then it will not be shown in any
saved files or in the records window.
Choose your units to convert from (i.e. cm, metres etc.) by clicking on the
icon to the far right and choosing from its menu. To toggle the value from
being positive to negative and vice versa, click on the 'negative' icon using
either SELECT or ADJUST.
Once you have set up the Input data, click on 'Calculate' with SELECT and the
conversion will appear in the icons below. Click on the arrows at the side of
the conversion to change its unit.
By dragging the text icon, you can save the conversion. As this is intended
for transferring data quickly into other applications there is no option to
change its filename.
(2) Storing Conversions
Once you have converted your number you can store it in the records window.
Firstly open the records window by clicking on 'View records'. Click on
'Store conversion' and the original and converted figures will appear in the
records window.
You can store a maximum of 10 records, as the last record is filled up the
computer will signal a beep.
The icons at the base of the window allow you select all records, clear the
selection and delete the selection, as well as opening the save menu and
closing the window.
(3) More on the Main Window
The following details some of the features not covered above.
If the caret is in the value writable icon, then pressing return will convert
in the same way as clicking with SELECT on the 'Calculate' icon.
Clicking adjust on "Calculate' will calculate, and send the conversion to
the records window (see above).
Clicking on 'Store conversion' with ADJUST will store the conversion and
open the records window.
Dragging the text icon in the main window with ADJUST will save the number
alone and not its unit, though this can be changed in the options window.
If you try to convert a number that is to large for Desktop Converter (and
BASIC V) then the converted value icon will display 'Error!!'.
(4) Saving
The save records menu is available from the main window menu, the records
window menu and the save icon in the records window (pressing F3 also opens
the save menu).
Moving right from the 'ASCII (text)' option, will allow you to save the
records as plain text.
Moving right from the 'CSV' option, will allow you to save the records as a
CSV file (described later).
In both case choosing the 'Selection' button will save selected records only.
The save windows are identical to the usual RISC OS ones and so you save in
the usual way.
(5) The main menu
Moving the pointer right, or clicking on 'Options...' will open the options
window (described later).
Moving right from 'Save records' will open the save menu.
Clicking on 'From metric' or 'To metric' has the same effect as clicking on
the icons in the main window.
Clicking on 'Store conversion' will store the conversion in the records
window.
Clicking on 'View records...' will open the records window.
Clicking on 'Basic maths...' will open the basic maths window.
Clicking on 'Calculate' has the same effect of clicking on the Calculate
button in the main window.
(6) The Records menu
Moving right from 'Save records' will open the save menu.
Clicking on 'Select all' will select all records.
Clicking on 'Clear selection' will deselect all selected records.
Clicking on 'Delete selection' will delete all selected records.
Clicking on 'Close window' will close the records window.
(7) The Icon Bar Menu
This is opened by clicking ADJUST over the icon-bar icon.
There are three entries in total.
Moving the pointer right from 'Info' will open the Info window which gives
details about Desktop Converter.
Clicking on 'Options' will open the Options window.
Clicking on 'Quit' will quit the application. Be careful as any data still
held by Desktop Converter will be lost.
(8) The Basic Maths Window
This window allows you to make simple calcultions and store them in the
records window.
To use enter click on the pop-up menu icon to bring up a menu. Choose
whatever operation you wish to perform from this menu.
Next, enter whatever numbers you wish to perform the operation on into the
appropriate writable icons.
Click on 'Calculate' and the answer will appear in the icon to the right.
Clicking with adjust will also store the result in the records window.
Click on 'Store converion' to store the conversion.
Click on 'Close window' to close the window.
(9) The Options Window
The options window allows you to change the program to suit your own
preferences.
'Beep on calculating' allows you to set whether or not the computer will
beep when a calculation is made.
'Adjust drag saves number only' determines whether when adjust dragging the
text file icon in the main window the number only will be saved without its
unit.
Altering the CSV headings changes the column headings in any CSV files that
are saved.
When the 'No headings' icon is selected CSV files will be saved without any
column headings.
Clicking on 'save' at the bottom of the window will save any changes made for
the next time the program is run.
Clicking on 'OK' will implement any changes made straight away.
Clicking on 'Cancel' will close the window ignoring any changes made.
(10) Printing
Although there are no direct printing facilities, if you should need to print
directly from Desktop Converter it can be done fairly simply.
Firstly load a RISC OS Printer Driver in the usual way.
Next open the Desktop Converter save text window (see above for details) and
drag the icon on to the printer driver's icon in the usual way. The records
will then be printed as plain text.
If you wish to print using outline fonts etc. then you will need to load the
data from Converter into another suitable application.
(11) Key Short-cuts
A large number of key short cuts are available. For them to work an icon in a
Desktop Converter window must contain the caret.
All short-cuts are shown on the relevant menus. The function key strip
drawfile supplied on the disc should be printed out, all but three short
cuts are shown there. The remaining three are relevant to the records window
only and are as follows:
Ctrl X - Delete selected icons.
Ctrl A - Select all records.
Ctrl Z - Deselect all records.
(12) Interpreting the Exponential Format
The advantage of using the exponent format is that you can enter and have
displayed very large or small numbers. So if you wished to enter
3,000,000,000,000 (3 with 12 zeros) you would not be able to enter this many
zeros as the is not enough space. You could however enter 3 and set the
exponent as 12 thus effectively move the decimal point 12 places to the left.
So 3,000,000,000,000 = 3E12.
Example
If a calculation gives the conversion 2.796161931E-4 then E-4 is the
exponent.
2.796161931E-4 is equivalent to 2.796161931 � 10^-4 = 0.0002796161931
( as 10-4 = 0.0001)
2.796161931E-4 means that you should move the decimal point 4 places to the
left to get the value on its own.
To convert a positive exponent move the decimal point to the right.
i.e. 1.23E3 =1230
To convert a negative exponent move the decimal point to the left.
i.e. 1.23E-3 = 0.00123
If you still don't understand this then as long as you are not converting to
and from large or small units then you can ignore these features. Remember if
E0 is displayed (i.e. the exponent is zero) then it has no effect on the
number at all. Indeed if the exponent is zero then it will not be shown in
any saved files nor in the records window.
Note that the exponent format should also be understood by most spreadsheets.
(13) CSV files
CSV files are a common method of transferring text and numerical data between
applications. It is commonly used by spreadsheets and similar applications on
most computer platforms. You should therefore have no trouble in transferring
data from Desktop Converter to a PC spreadsheet or integrated package.
