This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk
March 93
We select only the best software for publication to make sure
you have genuinely useful programs. Please read about the
programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully.
All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are
copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1993. They may not be
copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up
copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain.
Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is
inclusive of a site licence for the software.
Keep It Safe
Before doing anything else, you should make a backup of this
disk. Use only the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such
as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another
backup from the original.
Archived
The !AWMar93 application contains all the software, which is
stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the
disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !ArcFS
application. The '!AWMar93' application, when de-archived, will
not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk
and it will run perfectly well from there.
Running
To enable you to run the software from the archive we include a
copy of read only version !ArcFS. This application allows
loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual
way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading.
This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software
on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely
copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file
inside the application directory.
Copying Software
When the !AWMar93 application icon is dragged from the archive
window to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To
run the software uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to
be set to at least 1700k. If you have 2Mb or more of RAM then
you can create an 800K RAM disk and copy the !AWMar93 archive
to there. This greatly speeds up the loading of software from
the archive.
You can copy individual programs from the cover disk if you
choose. To do this click with the left (Select) mouse button on
the Open Viewer option. This will open a standard filer window
which you can drag the items from in the standard way. The
files will be de- archived as they are copied. They can then be
loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS.
If you have any difficulties running software from the archive
then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try
running them from there.
Documentation
All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes
World. Any additional documentation may be found in the
relevant directories on this disk. Text files can be displayed
from the menu using our built-in text display module. The text
display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that
your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu
The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and
read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a
sub-menu while others run applications or display text.
To select a menu item click the Select button once over its
icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the
desktop. To get the menu back, click on the Waiter icon on the
icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it.
To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be
instructions on using the program which can be viewed on
screen. Please be sure to read the instructions before you run
the programs.
The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option
which takes you back to the previous menu.

Teaser
Archimedes World Mental Health Warning:
This game will stretch your mind to its limits, and beyond.
Madness is a possible side effect.
Teaser it sets up a board of varying size. What you have to do
is recreate the image on the left by matching the numbered
squares. These are randomly set every time you play a new game.
Get your thinking caps on, you're going to need them!

Technique
Technique is one of those useful desktop applications which
provides many utility functions from within one single program.
Technique allows you to set file types, set the configuration
of your machine, even set how fast you want the mouse to move,
plus too many other features to mention here. Load it up to see
exactly what.

Diary
The diary application is very useful for all those appointments
you need to keep track of. It's great for birthdays, weddings,
important luncheon dates etc. The program will allow you to
save a week or a month, either in !Draw format or in Text mode
and has a very useful year planner display.
Warning
Before using this program, it is advisable to copy it to a
newly formatted disk. The reason is, as ever, that ARCFS only
allows reading of files and not writing. Remember this as it
saves all those errors appearing.

CounterAttack
CounterAttack is a computerised variation Othello. It is a two
player game (computer vs human or human vs human) where each
player has to move their own counters to adjacent squares and
capture counters belonging to your opponent. This gives you the
advantage in the game. The game ends when all squares have been
occupied, and the one with the most squares covered wins. But
watch out, a strong lead could end in defeat with just one well
placed move. There is also a chance to edit the playing area
to make things more difficult. You can also choose between easy
or hard games.

ResMod
Warning
This is a RISC OS 3 program. It will not run under RISC OS 2.
ResMod allows you to store whole programs in the Resource
filing System, within RISC OS 3. !ResMod will take your
program and turn it into a relocatable module, so that the
resource filing system can load it.

Video
This is a demonstration of a new product from Longman Logotron.
The Video application is a video library database program which
was created with the new S-Base database development package.
Please refer to the review of S-Base in the current issue of
the magazine for details of S-Base.

Kid Pix
This is one of those jolly little programs which only comes
along when there's a blue moon in the sky.
Kid Pix is a children's art program which is full of useful and
fun features which will appear to children of all ages. For
full details of Kid Pix, please refer to the review of it in
the current issue of the magazine.

Basic Programming
This months sees the start of a new series, in which we take a
look at programming in Basic and the use of variables. You also
have the chance to load the program into Basic so you can edit
it. The program this month is a simple multiplication game, have
fun.

Hard Disk Users Warning:
Many of the programs on this disk are generally set for drive
0, and sometimes you will find certain programs will not load.
The reason for this is that you may have configured your drive
to 4, rather than 0.
If a program does not load and gives an error, try configuring
the drive back to zero, this is done by pressing F12 from
desktop and typing *Configure Drive 0. This should then,
hopefully, remove any errors caused by any program run from the
menuing system. Regular Features The Adverts section contains
advertisements from certain companies who supply the Archimedes
marketplace. There are details of new products, sample files
and order forms.
There is also a number of forms for subscriptions, software
submissions and back issue orders which can be loaded into a
text editor, filled in and printed out. Viruses We take the
threat of viruses seriously at Archimedes World so our cover
disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are virus
free.
We can only check for known viruses and there is the small
possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our
checking procedure. Please be aware though that you are as
likely to contract a virus from any other source as you are
from Archimedes World. We want YOUR program Not only do we
want your program but we're also willing to pay for it. We are
interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens,
animation, clip art sprite/Draw files, music, sound samples,
games, demos and anything else that is interesting and
original.
You should also note that RISC-OS applications stand the best
chance of publication. You should always send in your program
submissions complete with the submission form and a Stamped
Addressed Envelope. Submission forms can be found on this disk
and inside the magazine (photocopies are accepted). Program
submissions are usually processed within four weeks of receipt,
however you should allow up to six weeks for a reply as
software evaluation and testing can take quite some time.
Software Sale The standard of software on this cover disk is
very high and is typical of the quality of software which has
been published by Archimedes World (and A&B Computing) over the
