This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

!BackDrops and !BackSetUp � Andrew J Booker

If you have many different backdrops, then you can use !BackSetUp and
!BackDrops together provide a method of controlling them. You can choose any
one backdrop to be loaded every time you run !BackDrops, or a random choice
from all of the backdrops or just from a pre-defined selection. These
programs require RISC OS 3 to run. They will be easier to use if you have a
hard disc, but there are no problems with using floppies.
Two applications are provided: !BackSetUp is used to setup the backdrops you
want to use, and !BackDrops will choose a random backdrop after you have set
things up with !BackSetUp.
Instructions
------------
Double click on the !BackSetUp icon in the filer; the icon will then appear
on the icon bar. Click select on this icon and a main window will open,
showing all the backdrops currently installed. Initially this will contain
only one backdrop, 'None'. You can drag sprite files containing backdrops to
this window to install them. The filename of the backdrop appears on the
left hand side of the window.
In the middle is an icon showing whether the backdrop should be scaled,
centred or tiled. Click over this icon to bring up a menu allowing you to
change this. The default is tiled.
On the right of the window is an option button. If this is on for a
particular backdrop, then that backdrop will be included in the choice from
which the random choice of backdrop is made.
Clicking menu anywhere over this main window brings up a menu. The top entry
in this menu is 'Startup'. Moving the pointer right from this entry brings
up a submenu showing all the installed backdrops, with the addition of
'Random' at the top. One of the menu entries will be ticked; this shows
which backdrop should be used when !BackDrops is run. Choosing any menu
entry will make the new choice the backdrop that is used.
The backdrops listed in the main window can all be selected in a similar way
to the filer. The second entry in the menu, "Backdrop 'name'" (or
"Selection") leads to a submenu allowing you to manipulate the chosen
backdrop or selection:
'View' will load the sprite file(s) into !Paint, so you can look at (and
edit) them.
'Make backdrop' will make the currently chosen backdrop into the actual
backdrop.
'Delete' will delete the backdrop from the list. No confirmation is
requested, so be sure you want to delete the chosen backdrop(s).
'Include in random' and 'Don't include' have the same effect as clicking on
the radio icons in the main window, similarly 'Scaled', 'Centred' and
'Tiled' change the display type of the selected backdrop(s). (If you have
one backdrop selected, the current options will be ticked. This will not be
the case if you have a multiple selection. Similarly, certain actions may be
greyed out if you have a multiple selection).
When you have set everything up in the window as you want to, quit the
!BackSetUp program, and add a line similar to '*Filer_Run
<Boot$Dir>.!BackDrops' to your boot sequence, AFTER the desktop has started.
The !BackDrops program will select your chosed backdrop, or a random one, as
you have chosen.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
!BackSetUp takes a copy of sprite files into its own directory when you drag
them to the main window, and deletes them from this directory when you
choose delete from the menu. However, the data file which gives !BackDrops
information on the files present in this directory is only saved when you
quit the !BackSetUp program, or shutdown the computer. Therefore, if for
some reason, the computer crashes while !BackSetUp is running, the data file
may be incorrect. You may notice this the next time you load !BackSetUp, and
find extra backdrops (or not all of them) in the list; another side effect
might be 'File not found' errors when you run !BackDrops. If you experience
these problems then the solution is:
1) Shift double clicking (hold down shift, double click with select, release
shift) on the !BackDrops icon. A new directory display will open.
2) Double clicking the 'ReMakeData' file in this directory display.
This action will have remade the data file. However, all backdrops will now
be set to tiled, and included in a random selection. This can altered with
the !BackSetUp program. You should not remake the data file while !BackSetUp
is running.
