ReadMe
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

File contents
Welcome Many thanks for buying this issue of Archimdes World. As usual, we've packed a wealth of new software items and demos onto two floppy disks so that you get the best possible choice. If you are a beginner, we would strongly urge you to read this file in its entirety, it contains many snippets of useful information. You should also read each of the help files that are supplied with the software on these disks so as to familiarise yourself. You will also find the instructions in the Disk World pages of the magazine to be of use. Compressed data --------------- This cover disk is supplied with a utility to enable you to decompact the software on it. This utility is called ArcFS and is stored on the root ($) directory of the disk for easy access. Load this by double-clicking on the !ArcFS icon and you'll then be able to open the archive. The version of !ArcFS on the cover disk is read only. This means that you can read from the compressed section but cannot write to it. This is a limiting factor for some applications as they may need to write data back to the disk for a high score table, or perhaps to store the set up options. This is not possible using this version of ArcFS. The solution is to decompact the applications and copy them to a new floppy or hard disk. This is imperative for some programs to function correctly and is recommended for all applications on the cover disk, just in case you encounter problems. Decompacting ------------ For the novice, decompacting the applications on the cover disk can be a bit awkward. However, all that you need is a reasonable understanding of how to copy files from one place to another, using mouse drags. The process for decompacting cover disk software differs depending on whether you've got a hard disk or not. If you have, there is no need to create a RAM disk. If you have just a floppy disk system, a RAM disk is advisable as it will save you having to swap disks. To set up a RAM disk, open the task manager display by clicking on the Acorn icon at the right of the icon bar. If you have RISC OS2, an Archimedes logo will be present rather than an Acorn and you will have to select the Task Window option from its menu. Once you have the task window on screen, scroll it until you see the entry for the RAM disk on the left and drag the bar until you get around 600k or more, then close the window. A new icon should now have appeared on the icon bar. This is the RAM disk icon. The RAM disk can be used in exactly the same way as a floppy or hard disk, but its contents will be lost if you reset or switch off the computer. Now open the Waiter menu and select the application you wish to decompact, then select the Open Filer option from the Waiter window. This will open a filer window that contains all the files relevant to your chosen application. Open a window for the RAM disk by clicking on the RAM disk icon and drag the files to this window. When the copying has finished, pop the cover disk out of the drive and insert a blank disk, or one that has some free space, and get a filer display. Now drag the files from the RAM disk window to the newly inserted disk. If you've got a hard disk, you can dispense with the RAM disk and simple drag the files directly to an area of your hard disk. If you've got a problem ----------------------- There are sometimes minor problems that crop up on the cover disks that prevent you from using the software. Many of these are simple to solve and the common ones are detailed in the magazine. Please do not contact us unless you have explored all other avenues. If you have verified the disk and find that there are disk errors, the disk itself is at fault and a telephone call cannot rectify the problem. Please send faulty disks (those with verify errors) back to TIB for a replacement. Their address is as follows: Archimedes World Cover Disk Returns TIB PLC 11 Edward Street Bradford BD4 7BH
