EXPLANATORY NOTES - By Forster Charlton The Northumbrian Small Pipes are a small bellows-blown bagpipe consisting of a chanter, or melody pipe, and usually four "drones", three of which are played together to provide a continuous drone harmony. It is not possible to emulate these properly on a computer having only three music sound channels, so a compromise had to be made. Sound channel 1 is mostly used for the melody and 2 and 3, at a reduced volume, to supply the drones. Music for the instrument was once written exclusively in the key of one sharp, but the subsequent addition of metal keys to the chanter made it possible to play in two and three sharps. However, the notes actually produced sound approximately a whole tone lower than they would on a piano. For this reason, I have made the computer play mostly in F and C so that it plays fairly well in tune with most sets of pipes. Bagpipes are played at a constant pressure and it is not possible to alter their loudness whilst being played, so there is no point in using sound envelopes and the natural sound of the oscillator does very well. Altogether, sixteen music tracks will be broadcast, each under its own filename. Each one may be LOADed or CHAINed independently until such time as they have all been received and saved on to the same disc. If INTRO and CHOICE2 are then added, the whole disc will be found to behave as a complete unit that can be called up by chaining "INTRO". When calling up tunes from the menu, there is no need to wait until one track has finished playing before you key in the next. You can, at any time, pre-select a whole programme and the tunes will come out in the order you selected. If you want a track to be repeated, just press the appropriate key the desired number of times. The set of Irish jigs is typical of the music played on the 'fiddle' or other folk instrument, to accompany the Tyneside Rapper Sword dance. Each village had its own particular, quite complicated routine. It is performed by a team of five men using two-handled short swords, usually accompanied by two clown characters, a 'Tommy', and a 'Betty' dressed as a woman. Local teachers still teach children this dance when they can find enough enthuiastic pupils. Some of the tunes are very old and use only the eight notes obtainable on the original keyless chanter. One of these, 'I Saw My Love Come Passing By Me', is still considered to be a virtuoso piece. It can justifiably be called the 'perpetuum mobile' of the Small Pipes, and you can demonstrate this for yourself as follows: With the disc in place, switch on the computer and LOAD "ISAWMY".
