VIEW/GEOGRAPHY/METHOD

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

CE METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

I spent about 5 days gathering data for this
project. In order to make the collection easier, I divided it into
two parts - land use data and land type data. Land use data is
obviously what the land is used for and land type data is really
the physical propeties of the land. The features that I studied for
land type were :

		- Vegetation cover

		- Aspect of slope

		- Geology (soil type)

		- Height of land & slope angle

		- Distance from communications

However, it was not possible to record all these
factors by just walking around Chipstead. I had to go to the
library and look at a geographical map of the area to find the soil
types and the height of the land (from the map contours). This
infomation must then be counted as secondary data, but unfortunatly
that was necessary to gather it.

To gather the data I divided the parish into
sections. This can be seen clearer by looking at the sketch map of
Chipstead. First I covered the North-west corner, including the
station, because it was near to my house. Next I covered everything
East of the pub down to Noak Farm - just inside the parish border.
Finally I collected data from the South-west corner, keeping to the
South of Outwood Lane.

I found the easiest way to record all the land uses and
types was to walk along the roads and write down the data for both
sides. That way I had a piece of paper for every road with
infomation about each side of it. When there was a large area of
open land I just recorded its data on a seperate sheet. Then, when
I returned home, I was able to constructan accurate picture of the
whole parish - with the use of a map to help put the data into
context.

Once I had gathered all this data - and taken a number of
photographs - it was possible to plan out the rest of the project
by deciding how I would use the results to explain land use. I made
a list of the ways I could repreent this infomation in an easily-
understood way :

	- Bar charts - Maps

	- Chloropleth shading - Overlay mapping

	- Photographs & explanations	- Pie charts

	- Tables of results - Propotional circles
